Planet Earth ; bird commits suicide

So I'm at work this morning and while standing around talking to our delivery drivers, we hear a really loud thud/crash. My initial reaction was that someone got in a wreck, so we ran outside only to see traffic flowing just fine. Then I thought a piece of furniture had fallen over outside (we line new inventory up on the sidewalk outside the store before we bring it in) but nothing had fallen. Bewildered I turn around to go back inside, and noticed a pigeon twiching on the ground. The son of a bitch had flown straight into the window at full speed. He hit it so hard that his brains literally exploded all over the window and the ground. It was fucking crazy. I've never seen anything like this before in my life. I took some pics with my phone. Look at it's brains on the window seal. If you look closely at the bird, you can see his head was totally flattened. Poor lil bugga.

Great photos, I've heard/seen this happen...actually only once. It is kind of morbid to experience though. Poor bird ...think about it though, even humans run into screen doors and glass doors, i've seen that happen more than I have a bird flying into glass

Great pics poor bird, once a bat flew into our house when I was young and got stuck in my mothers hair. Wish we had video back then, would have made a great vid.

Same stuff (the pigeon, not the bat) happened a dozen time at my parent's house. The birds think they can fly through the house, from one (big) window to the other (big) one.
Usually, they are only knocked-out and recover several minutes later.

i actually held a purple martin for about half an hour a month ago at my parents after it slammed into the window, saved it from my cat before the cat tore it up. when it finally came to within 10-15 minutes, it just didn't want to leave. it was kinda cool. maybe i was its new mama.

it usually happens when they see the reflection of a tree (or some other object they want to land on) in the window.
