i like how microsoft puts out a massive product like vista, then plans a massive upgrade to fix all the things they fucked up with the original version. how about just make it right the first time?

I hope it just fixes all the problems..... period.

My vista has suddenly stopped recognizing USB memory sticks and refuses to launch my FTP app. I fear a clean install coming up.... UGH

makes no sense to me to say "im using the latest and greatest," yea well, it doesnt work very well does it?

I still have XP, but I have to do testing here so that is the only reason I run it. As far as I am concerned we won't be rolling this out anytime soon.

its not like XP didn't have its share of problems, other than hardware compatibility (resulting from a hasty roll out), Vista has performed as well as XP has for me in the past.

Windows 95 - Revolutionised PC desktops
Windows 98 - Built upon 95 with enhanced features
Windows ME - A few bells and whistles but nothing warranted upgrading (in fact, my experience of ME was so bad I uninstalled it within days of installing)

Windows 2000 - Revolutionised PC desktops (well, not many but a lot)
Windows XP - Built upon 2000 with enhanced features (and marketed for the home)
Windows Vista - Bells, whistles, resource hungry - why upgrade???


Vista = ME all over again. Windows 7 has to do more to make people want it. 2000 introduced NTFS into the home desktop environment (despite it being built for business, many people went for it) and it totally transformed the Windows experience. Problem is for Microsoft is that XP has actually become a very stable and reliable operating system and Vista has offered nothing really new to make it an attractive upgrade.

Because for many people (not all) we have yet to witness these problems that many people do see. Maybe we're the lucky ones but I haven't had a single problem with my Vista setup yet. That's not to say that everyone is so "lucky".

exactly what i was thinking. i think vista was rolled out as fast as possible to help curb people from going over to Apple because of all of the bells and whistles OSX has. Problem is, OSX is stable because of its unix core and well.. microsoft is just microsoft =\

You're forgetting that OSX is stable because Apple is primarily a hardware company that designed the software to work with their hardware. I'm not trying to downplay them at all but that's a very strong point that many people seem to forget. I don't mean to repeat myself to you but I know you've progressed farther than myself in the educational system. That's why I'm breaking it down for you.

I agree Vista is resource hungry, there is no question about that in my mind. To many who weren't ready for hardware upgrades but wanted to try out vista, it seemed like a huge cash expense coming their way, to those on the verge of getting new hardware anyways, vista's upgrade didn't hit the bank as bad. (Dec 07, I paid $629 for a Dual Core 5600+ AMD, 3 GB Ram, DVD Burner, Vista Home Premium).

I also agree that a MAJORITY of Vista's supposed "features" remain unused by the general public. Yea I could stick a 1 gig USB stick into my laptop and make mundane operations faster but who needs MORE expense on an OS that's already twice the price (perhaps nearly 4 times depending on the version you choose) of XP.

But I'll tell you something that I DO love about Vista is their automatic hardware driver updating engine. Its FANTASTIC and simply put.... it just fucking works. Yea it's taken a little time for HW vendors to catch up and release vista specific drivers but in my case, for nearly every device I have on my PC, I've run an automatic driver update for the device and it's found a driver on the web.

Heck just 3 days back I upgraded the drivers from Hauppauge for my TV Tuner card but I was still not entirely pleased with the results and so I went into device manager and did an automatic update for the Chipsets on the dual tuners and Vista found them. Made a heck of a difference in picture quality and I was very very surprised Vista even found them to begin with.

If you were to consider the amount of time and energy I would have ended up expending had I been on an XP machine i.e. pulling the PC from the entertainment unit, opening the case, pulling the card out to find the make model of the chipsets, slap the PC back together, boot up, spend at minimum 15 minutes (maximum who knows - all the way to the point of giving up) just to search, download, save, and install, - can you figure how much time and frustration I saved ?

I dont know how much of an expense you relate to the effort it would have taken (especially if you would have spent hours looking for a driver - to the point of giving up absolutely flustered by the experience), but for this simple ability, a Vista expense could become justified.

Of course the argument would go "but what if Vista didn't find a driver". Well in the long run (considering 2 - 3 years before the next OS version rolls out), it would pay itself off wouldn't it?

Yea but in essence, that just makes OSX a paid flavor of *Nix backed by a giant corporation. Of course I dont deny the stability and dependability of *Nix and OSX as a result, but you can't compare the two because at it's core, OSX isnt an original development, it's an OS that's built its foundation from "borrowed code". There' no denying Apple made a heck of a creation out of Unix but if you are to compare the two and if Apple made an OS from scratch, only then would the battle field be on an even playing ground for the 2 OS'es.
