No I've been to the doctor, he then referred me to a radiologist to have it x-rayed for any breaks, after that i went for an ultrasound, this is where they found damage to the ligaments.

As i said in my first post, i don't trust this doc, he's not my regular one, he answered all of my questions with such vagueness i limped out of there not really knowing that much at all about what I'd done to my foot. He stressed that i rest up and keep it elevated, that's all that could be done. And by the sounds of it, there really isn't much else i can do.

Since the photo above my entire foot has turned black, fucken nasty looking but the pain is getting bearable.

Cheers for the feedback guys, i was looking for some reassurance and i got it. Back to work on Monday for light duties ie. sitting on my ass all day doing paperwork instead of being out on construction sites. YAY!

Bender - that's the shit I'm worried about! I need my ankles for bball

Try icing continously for three days to get rid of all the swelling
and get the DVD's out and just prop that ankle up even while you sleep with a bunch of pillow, might be uncomfortable as hell, should make it somewhat usable, can't say it will work for you but I've to do it before from lack of money to see a doctor, good luck

        Re: Ankle injuries..who's had them?

Pisana, listen to me I've made my living as a physio for the last 10 years treating at leat 3 sprained ankles a week, so I've seen and treated hundreds of these.

The advice I'm giving assumes that you have no fracture at all.

        1) Do NOT ice it any more. It is of no use any more and will hinder further healing. The acute stages of this injury have passed and further application of ice will be detrimental as it decreases circulation.

        2) At this stage do not put any heat on it either. Heat will be of assistance in about 7-10 days time.

        3) You must start to weight-bear on it as soon as possible, pain or no pain and throw away any walking aid (crutches, walking stick) that you may have. If you want, take some Voltaren or other non-steroidal to take the edge off. Plenty of studies of these injuries have shown that early weight-bearing is the most important contributor to speed of recovery. The weight-bearing stimulus actually encourages early collagen re-synthesis and collagen is the basic building block of ligaments.

        4) When off your feet elevate it and do intrinsic foot exercises i.e. basically just curl your toes again and again tensing all the muscles in the sole of the foot.

        5) Start to do calve raises. Half the reason you have so much swelling is that your venous return is so poor because you are not utilising the calve muscles which act as a pump to draw away fluid from the feet. Support your body weight in standing by leaning on a wall with both arms and raise your heels off the ground. Keep yout hips and back straight. Don't count but do as many as you can till you fatigue or injury pain gets worse.

        6) If you have access to a mini-trampoline use it. Don't jump on it just bounce transferring weight from one foot to the other.

        7) Also use a wobble board to start to regain the proprioceptive function i.e. the balance function of you ankle ligaments. The quicker you work on this the quicker your recovery.

Assuming you have not completely ruptured the ATFL (anterior talo-fibular ligament) what we're looking at here is a high-grade 1 / low grade 2 inversion sprain. Expect a full healing time of 5-6 weeks from the date of injury, i.e. a return to high impact/intensity sport. You will not reach this unless you exercise and stretch your calve muscle. If you have completely ruptured the ATFL recovery will be longer.
See an experienced sports physical therapist who can make the distinction for you.
However most ankle injuries by far are grade 1 inversion sprains.

you sir are a god! I fucked the crutches off as of yesterday and have been putting weight back on it, not all but some weight. The pain is minimal now, so much that i don't need any pain killers.

I've taken all that you've said on board, thanks again!

                  Re: Ankle injuries..who's had them?

Did mine while playing a game of cricket in 1993. I was a young kid then and a tear away fast bowler. We made a few runs that game of which i made 60 odd. It was bout 40 degrees and after we batted i needed to take some rest cause i was suffering from heat exhaustion. Anyway when i came on the team was in trouble and i could not bowl for like 8-12 overs cause i was off the ground for that time. Anyway when i did get a chance to bowl my captain said bowl as quick as u can cause we need wickets.. i think it was my 3rd or 4th ball in and i rolled my left ankle inward.. i fell down like a pack of shit and the pain was the worst thing i have ever felt prob to this day. i went to the doctors after the game and he said i tore the ligaments. i was on crutches for bout a month. Can't remember if we won the game but i made the school boy's team for Victoria and did not get to play because of it.. i was really upset and my cricket ability has gone down hill since then hahaha.. i still play though. don't think i will stop till i am bout 70 or 80 LOL

Did my ankle in on Friday night playing squash. Tore all the ligaments in my right ankle. Doc strapped it and off my feet for a week which = no work. Pain is fucking terrible tho!

The largest room in the world, is the room for improvement!

damn, sorry to hear pisana. i've been there. i've sprained and torn ligaments in my right ankle twice or three times when i was younger, from skateboarding. It really makes you appreciate being able to walk normally.

there's some good advice in this thread alredy. Hope you recover quickly!
