    The UK Club Scene

Its that very dull time of year in the EDM scene for nights out, and its ocurred to me how drab and jaded the UK club scene has become.

A complete lack of dynamic clubs, particularly outside London, which ends up full of curious tourists anyway. Even in london Turnmills is due to close (property re-development) as the Cross looks to have, and Bedrock is limited to seasonal one-offs.

Outside the capital Cream long gave up the game, Gatecrasher burned down, and Sankeys has been re-done to a badly laid out room with a limp sound system,

Even the likes of Sasha, Diggers and Hernan seem to have lost interest (who can blame them ... I'd far rather be visiting South America, the far East, Eastern Europe and the US too !) .. but their slots aren't exactly being filled by other DJ's. I'm sure the big names only turn up to keep their profile alive for CD sales (cue Involver2, Transitions and Sequential appearances when the time is right) or for big festival pay-days.

Thank fuck for ibiza is all i can say .. roll on June !

    Any thoughts guys ?

    Re: The UK Club Scene

    I completely agree with you.
In London the only ok nights were at the cross...the end sometimes puts on an ok party but apart from that its all pretty shit imo.
I think the problem is that the venues are so damn expensive + the crowd has just grown indifferent as most are used to big names and don't give DJ's the same welcome they get in countries that rarely get them to come around.

+ you can't smoke in clubs anymore thats been a MAJOR downer for me personally.

Yeh ... but when will the next Bedrock after that be, and will JD play any other uk dates that weekend, or high-tail his ass out of there ?

Very sad about Turnmills Just quietly I think they entry fees are pretty cheap for the quality of Djs you get.

I would disagree to be honest I never really liked turnmills unless I was on a tub of acid.

The price was not cheap considering that dj's usually played only for an hour an a half.
I much prefer the end where you get garnier who comes and spins for 6-7 hours straight.

So who would you like to see?
Then the problem is with you...you shouldn't limit your interest to Sasha and Digweed...there are many great dj's out there.
I like to listen to everything thats good. So i go to everything when I have a chance from moralles to umek...from digweed to timo maas...I like to see and hear it all.

What I listen to privatly might be different but I'll go anywhere where I think the crowd might be energetic or that I think might be a fun party.

That's exactly why dj's go to America, Asia and E.europe because people in the UK are spoiled with choice...in all other countries people are excited about a lot less famous names than these above while you only moan about digweed taking a flight out of here.

Nothing personal...it just sounds that way from where I am standing.

Would have to agree on the scene in general.
Everyone is so global now that tour every continent
and a ton of countries, but really tough when you might
get to see someone you like maybe twice a year, three times
if you happen to grab them at an out of towner.
The west coast US has been really slow.

Not really. The scene in Singapore is such that if you're a nobody, nobody turns up. Even if you're somebody, you might not be on the punters' radar because the masses over here prefer trance, r&b, and some techno, and that electroshit, and that neurave fuck. The scene here prefers harder music or faddish music, stuff that delivers instant gratification. It's only testament to a DJ like Digweed who can keep the crowd on the floor while building his set. People like Peter Kruder, Steve Bug, or Magda will never ever work the main floor here. DJs like Chris Fortier and JVM had very lukewarm, if any, response except for a handful of people who showed up for them, the rest just happened to be there for the weekend. Same with Moshic (he was extremely disappointed!) and Aril Brikha, and Kasey Taylor. Even Phil K, if he never hooked up with Dave Seaman. Even seeing Three and Folder work the floor was an amazing surprise. Reaction to Gui Boratto this weekend ought to be interesting.

Oh but the club was packed over the weekend to Above & Beyond

                        Re: The UK Club Scene

well I don't know I have to speak from my experience...
In serbia I always see the exact same people on every EDM event whatever it is: Satoshi Tomiie, Timo Maas, Digweed, Sasha, Felix, Cattaneo, Garcia...to Sanchez, Sinclar, Moralles...the only difference is of course that the latter three are obviously advertised more and so attract the usual edm lovers and a bunch of other fuckers who like their production and end up being disappointed because they couldn't sing along to the music

but I don't believe any night was a complete failure as you talk about...maybe something that just wasn't publicized and so nobody knew about it.
just to make it clear in Serbia there is maybe on average one to two good events per month therefore beggars can't be choosers is the motto and people are just happy to hear anything that isn't local pop.

Furthermore all the dj's get a really good reaction from the crowd and ALWAYS come back. I don't think they get paid as much as they do in the UK...

I wouldn't go as far as to say those nights were failure, it's all relative, just comparing the turnouts with those for Sasha, Tiesto, PVD, etc. You get the idea But we have it pretty good these days since a lot of DJs are playing Asia and Singapore is more often than not a pitstop for them.
