Elections are underway for the 111th US congress. The 111th US Congress sessions will commence from January 3, 2009 to January 3, 2011. Each state receives nomination in the house proportional to its population but is entitled to at least one representative. The total number of representatives is currently fixed at 435.Each representative serves for a two-year term. The presiding officer of the House is the Speaker, and is elected by the members.
The notable races taking part in the US congress elections include Alabama, Alaska, Illinois, Louisiana, Texas and California. Out of these notable races, the one attracting considerable attention is the Texas 22nd Congressional District. This region covers the south-central portion of the Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown metropolitan area. It also includes the cities of Rosenberg and La Marque as well as portions of Missouri City and Pearland, in Fort Bend, Harris, Galveston, and Brazoria counties. This hotly contested constituency has been represented by Republican Party for nearly 20 years. This was represented by the leader House Majority Tom DeLay, who eventually vacated the seat to Democrat, Nick Lampson in 2007. This was a rare event as the seat has not been given to a Democrat since 1964. The Democrat Lampson is standing for a re-election. Along with him, there are other known names standing for election. This includes former Sugar Land mayor Dean Hrbacek , former Pasadena mayor John Manlove, former John Cornyn Chief of Staff Pete Olson, Family District Judge Jim Squier, State Representative Bob Talton, and NASA contractor Ryan Rowley.
Lampson is standing for a re-election in 2008. The democrat is expected to face a tough competition, this time in a heavily Republican constituency. The 22nd had long been considered a solidly Republican district, with a Cook Partisan Voting Index of R+15. A Democratic presidential candidate had not carried the district since Lyndon B. Johnson defeated Barry Goldwater in the 1964 election. This constituency is known to have played a major role in voting George W. Bush over John Kerry by a 2 to 1 (66%-33%) margin, more than any other district that fell to the Democrats in 2006.
