    Carandiru

I saw this movie a few weeks ago and I must say it was very very good! It was about an overcrowded Brazilian prison in the late 80s. The acting was impressive and it was a very moving story. Has anyone else seen this film?

          Re: Carandiru

just saw this last night... awesome flick, everyone go get it. it's based on a true story about a doctor in Carandiru prison, a run-down, AIDs-infested, 4000-capacity/7500-populated "community," aka the largest prison in South America. It's filmed similarly to City of God: City of God follows the lives of all main characters until their deaths, where Carandiru shows the crimes that all the main characters committed to get them into prison. The flick has some mild humor (if you can catch it), lots of death, rape, disease, machine guns, a huge police force, and all of the pointless/relentless bloodshed you can handle. a must watch.

cool fact... The real Carandiru prison was demolished in 2002 after the last prisoner was transferred, but was first set aside for filming this movie. The film was the last thing they used the prison for before demolishing 90% of it.

                Carandiru (2003)

From IMDB: Film based on real life experiences of doctor Drauzio Varella inside dreadful State penitentiary Carandiru, in São Paulo, Brazil, while he was doing a social work of Aids prevention. There he found hundreds of convicts living under degrading conditions. The situation came to a climax in 1992, when in order to smother a rebellion, police force killed 111 men.

Just watched this film, very original way of telling a story, great acting, solid plot, etc. great movie...
