TEANECK -- A part-time lab technician at Holy Name Hospital was caught having sex with the body of a 92-year-old woman in the hospital's morgue, authorities said Monday.
Authorities said Anthony Merino, 24, of West 185th Street in Manhattan was working a shift as a histology lab technician on Sunday morning when he asked a security guard for access to a refrigerated area adjacent to the morgue where human tissue samples are stored. The guard complied and then wandered away for several minutes, Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli said.
"When he came back, he observed Mr. Merino violating the deceased victim" on a gurney, Molinelli said. "He immediately notified Teaneck police."
Merino was arrested at the hospital later Sunday morning. He was charged with sexual penetration upon deceased human remains, a second-degree crime that carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $100,000 fine.

Merino was being held Monday night on $400,000 bail. He was ordered to undergo a psychological evaluation, Molinelli said.
"This heinous crime is a travesty," said Jane Ellis, a Holy Name spokeswoman. "We are horrified and saddened for the family of the patient."
Ellis did not give an account of the incident, saying it involved "a newly hired per-diem employee" who was "immediately terminated" after he was arrested around 10:45 a.m.
Merino, who has a full-time job at Overlook Hospital in Summit, had worked at Holy Name on a contract basis since June, Molinelli said. His shift there on Sunday was his first in more than a month, the prosecutor said.
Ellis said the hospital conducts a background check on every new employee. Asked if a background check had raised concerns in this case, Ellis said, "There couldn't have been [any problems] if we hired him. There was nothing reported."
The victim's family was notified, Molinelli said, but she was not identified. Authorities declined to disclose her hometown or a cause of death and would not say how long her body had been in the morgue.
"In respect to the family of the patient involved, our prayers are with them," Ellis said. "This is a confidential matter due to the ongoing investigation, and we are unable to provide further information at this time."
Merino had worked at Overlook since early September, said Joan Lebow, a spokeswoman for Atlantic Health, which runs the hospital. She said he has been suspended because of the arrest.
Lebow declined to say what Merino did at Overlook, but he identifies himself on his MySpace profile as a histotechnician there. Histology involves the detection of abnormalities in thin slices of human or animal tissue, and the diagnosis and treatment of the diseases causing those abnormalities.
Authorities said Merino also is employed part time at Bio-Reference Laboratories Inc. in Elmwood Park. Officials there could not be reached Monday.
Merino's MySpace page lists "working hard" and "going out to the hottest clubs in NYC" among his hobbies.
He also claims to play semi-professional football with two teams, the Empire State Titans and the New York State Broncos, and he has posted photographs of himself posing in his Titans uniform.
Neither team posts a roster on its Web site, and team officials could not be reached Monday night to confirm Merino's involvement.
He also claims to be studying engineering and business administration at CUNY Lehman College.
Merino's MySpace page features pictures of him bare-chested and flexing, as well as numerous Playboy bunny icons and a quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson.
"What lies behind us and what lies before us are small matters compared to what lies within us," it reads.
