    u.s. oil consumption

i was curious as to how much oil we consume per day opposed to other countries...
in case any of you guys didn't know or are curious yourselves check out this link...

This entry is the total oil consumed in barrels per day (bbl/day). The discrepancy between the amount of oil produced and/or imported and the amount consumed and/or exported is due to the omission of stock changes, refinery gains, and other complicating factors.

On a related note, take a look at this graph charting the progression of oil prices. It is fucking obnoxious. Do you realize oil has gone up $30/barrel in 2008 alone?

...and if I may hijack my own post, does anyone notice anything about the time period where it starts to go up, and what has happened since then? I'm not saying anything, I'm just sayin'...

a barrel of oil costs less than a barrel of spring water. think about that, considering what oil companies go through in order to find and produce it.

Yes, we do need to get off the oil... for sure.

Unfortunately, the only people who can do anything about it are us. We just have to use less. If everybody here in the USA cut back their oil use by 10%, prices would come down dramatically.

It's funny to watch the policticians running for president claim they can solve the oil price issue. They can't do a thing about it. Oil prices are controlled by cartel.

The democrats oppose increased refineries, domestic drilling, and alternative energy sources like nuclear power. The republicans refuse to do anything which might upset the oil companies, who are making record profits.

Only the people have the power to affect this issue. And we're simply not willing to do what is necessary.

That is true, but hardly surprising. Think about what goes into making/transporting that spring water. Oil is used to create the plastic for the bottle, and to truck the water to your store shelf. When you think about our daily lives and all the little things we do, and then think about how much energy must be consumed for us to have these things.... it's really amazing.

You know that BMW has already begun production of their hydrogen car.

Unfortunately, there are only 1 or 2 hydrogen fueling stations in the entire USA. Lot of good that does, huh? The technology is there, just no infrastructure.

petroleum based products go waaaay beyond just fuel for our automobiles. the prescription drug business needs oil too.

Almost every business uses some oil in some way, even if indirectly.

Imagine what would happen if tomorrow the gasoline supply for the entire USA were shut off everywhere. (And for argument sake, assume we have no reserves)

Most of the population would be dead within weeks from starvation. We wouldn't be able to get food or water. Where do you get your food? Grocery store? Restaurant? Without gasoline, neither can receive shipments. Most people can't get work work, either. Entire economy shuts down. Yikes. It would be like the stone age.

Not that this would actually happen... just a crazy thought, though.

Only the people who can hunt would be able to eat. Of course, those resources would become scarce quickly, too.

the scariest dependancy, in my opinion, is the fertilizer industry (which uses oil to produce fertilizer). the only reason the world can sustain the number of people it currently has is due in large part to agricultural improvements...mainly from fertilizers. when the world runs out of oil, there is the distinct possiblity of a global food shortage unless we come up with a fix in the mean time!

There is another side of this, though. I had forgotten about it until now.

                              China.

China can't get enough oil to sustain the levels of growth their economy should be capable of.

If we used less oil, China would just use more. And they would advance faster, which might not necessarily be a good thing for us.

Fucked if we do.... fucked if we don't.
