    yes, but the amount of technical expertise and money that goes into finding oil is mindblowing! people think that nasa and the space program are technically advanced, yet some of the most cutting edge science done on the planet to day has to do with finding oil. it is much more difficult to drill the deepest well on record than it is to put something in orbit. i don't think most people appreciate the technological complexity of some of the more 'unconventional' projects being progressed in the oil and gas world today.

    and the other thing to discuss...yes oil companies are making killer profits right now. it happens with commodities...boom and bust. in 1999 the price of oil was $10 a barrel. industry was laying people off by the tens of thousands. there wasn't a whole lot of sympathy for the industry then, so i find the scorn people are directing towards industry now to be a bit misdirected.

        Valid point. It just goes to show how much the world is pushed and pulled by mass social mood.
