    Space Junk

Images of the congestion in low orbit around the planet.

it looks pretty rammed up there. 6000 satellites launched since the 60's. only 800 operational. this is gonna be a problem in the future me thinks. it already looks like a nightmare to get around. wtf we gonna do when we have to start navigating through this mess?

I'm surprised the bulk of it hasn't fallen back to Earth?

I got pics and video. But I will upload them in the morning. I need to smoke this nice phat joint and just close my eyes and replay the amazingness in my head.

That is bogus. There is no way 6000 satellites would look like that.

agreed, it surely would take millions to go all the way round a planet like that

A satellite looks like no more than a pinpoint of light in the night sky from earth, from a distance of ~50miles. At this distance, at least a few hundred miles, it's doubtful that you'd be able to read NASA on the side of the can like you practically can with some of these.
It's never too late to become the person you always thought you would be.

LOL, I see what looks to be a can of baked beans or tuna fish floating around. Someone is surely having fun with photoshop here.

                          Re: Space Junk

i saw this on daily planet. there isnt' just 6000 satellites, but another 42,000 pieces of 'junk'. stuff jetisoned from space missions, things they've lost off the space station, etc. there is alot of crap up there, orbiting at very fast speeds (think 10x faster than a bullet). the guy was saying its not a matter of if, but when, this starts to be a real concern for the safety of people up there. getting hit by something a little bigger than a grain of sand could puncture a space suit.

and of course they photoshopped them to make them look bigger. if they drew them to scale...you wouldn't see anything but the earth.

That's still a fair bit of shit ... and why isn't any of them coming down? I thought all objects in geosynchronous or any ol' orbit are on a slow descent back to Earth?
