    definition of a DJ..

im talking to a friend over the phone last night and im all exited telling her about some new traks i got. the she says "you should be a dj since you love it so much"... i said to her "i am a dj, i used to play at drais (popular after hours spot in vegas"...
but then i started thinking, isn't a dj somebody that moves a crowd by playing the right track at the right time..
isn't a dj someone who takes people on a journey....

i dont do that anymore, i have no crowd, i dont buy as many records as i used to,i just play at home for my dogs, am i a dj still or do i just play records..

    by definition

    disc jockey
    Function: noun
: an announcer of a radio show of popular recorded music; also : one who plays recorded music for dancing at a nightclub or party

    so my question is
    what is a dj?

I mix records, but i don't consider myself a DJ. I think you second definition is what suits a DJ more.

What i dislike even more now is every other moron that because he mixes a groove armada track and a Dirty Vegas considers himself a hotshot DJ bragging all the time about it. I dont know about you but i've met quite a few of those.

YES DJs should take people on journeys
YES DJs should move the crowds
NO DJs don't play Dirty Vegas!!!!!!

I don't think you can call yourself a DJ unless you're playing gigs at clubs. And not just a once in awhile thing. You need to play regularly at a club or clubs and be getting paid to call yourself a DJ.

in my opinion, a dj is someone who can mix tracks smoothly and can create a certain atmosphere, not just play some random records

Jockeys work horses, disc jockeys work music, radio disc jockeys work both radio and music. Considering semantics, a cook could be food jockey, a bartender a drink jockey, and Michael Moore a shit jockey.

So if you can really work the music, you're a DJ. Whether or not you're a good DJ is a whole other question. That's when "playing gigs" and "getting paid" counts.
