    S.O.S Please..........

the big problem that ive got is on the second paragraph, but if you like read the first one aswell as an introduction which may help..
right, so here is whats happened...
i have a Dell Latitude C400 and about a month ago i upgraded its ram to 1G.
as you may know this laptop although its got two memory slots, only one is easily accesible from the back of the laptop.the other slot is inside, under the keyboard. so as i had already changed the ram at the back of the laptop well before then, now i had to open the laptop.so no problem,i did that and i replaced the ram,put it back together, switched it on and hey it works and memory its upgraded to 1G!!but there is a problem with the mouse pointer.although i dont move the mouse,i dont even touch it,the pointer on the screen moves upwards non stop.i drag it down with the mouse and as soon i leave it it moves again slowly or fast to the top of the screen.if i switch the laptop on and off a few times it seems that it fixes the problem and thats why i rarely switch it off now.

yesterday now i downloaded some updates so automaticly it restarted. for the whole day the mouse pointer drove me crazy.it was moving all the time and none of the tricks i knew seemed to work.. so after something like 12h trying to fix it, i was so pissed off with it that i hitted the keyboard twice with my hands.when i turned it back on, that was it.it couldnt see the hard drive,it wasnt loading to windows and a message came up saying:

" Hard Disc #***********-595B. The System Primary HDD is protected by a password authenication system. You cannot access data on this Hard Drive without the correct password.

Please type in the Hard Drive password and press <Enter> "

wtf???? i hadnt put a password on my hard drive,i didnt even know where to put it...
before it gets on this message it, i can also press f2 to get on the setup menu or f12 to get on the boot menu, but unfortunately this laptop doesnt have an internal cd drive (to load the XP again or go to repair from the XP cd) and the external cd drive ive got although connected it cant be seen...
whats going on there? do you think its something that can be fixed or is the hard drive gone??? not only the softwares i had, pictures, videos, sets downloaded from here and the worst is that i had about 40G in tunes. about half of them were already on cds but not all of them...

    Please guys, HELP.......

some laptops have this to protect it if it were to be stolen.

i would look through the manual or paperwork you got with it (hopefully you didnt toss them) and see if it mentions a HD password anywhere.

thats where i would start... if no luck, try calling dell.

the thing is this hard drive is not the original one.when i got the laptop the hard drive it came with it was only 20G,so about a couple months later it was full and i replaced it with a bigger one,the one iive got the problem now.apparently i got the hard drive from ebay i think 2 years ago.do you think it might be a good idea to try to find the seller i got it from and ask him aswell?

        yea, try that.

if all else fails, take it to best buy and have their geek squad take a look at it.

for the future, never buy stuff like this from a person on ebay, unless it is sealed with all the paperwork... for reasons just like this.

ok thanks DDR, i appreciate your help mate!
i think best thing is to start emailing all these people.the hard drive is Hitachi so i'll might email them aswell.
i really hope the problem will be fixed cose the hard drive was full of things that cant be recovered otherwise...
