Re: I don't fucking believe this!

so i have a question now as my problem is with my master internal hard drive.
i was just reading that forum DJKIX gave us the link, and i found this program file scavenger
which is maybe a good idea for Feather and in general with for all the external drives but what about internals?is there any hope?
common sense says to buy an external case and transform my internal to external and then use that software just in case i can recover the files..
what do you guys think? any other suggestions?

After blowing 2 IBM drives in a week a few years ago, I upgraded one of my PC with a raid5 array. 868MB of pure protection. If one disk crash, I just have to put back a new one and the array will rebuild from scratch. Of course, it's noisy as hell, but that's why it's set up in the next room (which is also the toilet)

Call it a hunch, but based on what you're saying the case supply/chipset may have died.
That's what I thought too, but I swapped another hdd into the casing and that was fine. Swapped my dead hdd into a different casing and it stayed dead.

Was just thinking that too, RAID. Always thought it might be overkill but damn it. And this is the SECOND Hitachi (who bought over IBM hdd) to die on me! Another 180GB died before.

Ironically I have 2 Maxtors, supposedly shit, 40GB and 20GB, still working fine.

Will look into those software but am quite doubtful because the platters won't spin at all

Was reading the thread and some guy posted a link to this external casing, which is what I just got for my Western Digital 400GB, it's pretty sweet:

RAID5 sounds like the way to go!

If your livelihood or career could ever be put in jeopardy by the loss of hard drive data. I would always suggest running a RAID5 SATA array on your main desktop computer. I have always found backing up to DVD a long and tedious process, raid5 allows for active data redundancy, with a kicker of being twice as fast as a standard hard drive configuration. (transfer 20GB of files to an external drive over firewire in about 10 minutes). In the past RAID5 was very expensive and usually only available with SCSI controller cards (they start at around 750 dollars). With the advent and standardization of SATA, many motherboards and controller cards now support RAID5. RAID 5 requires 3 hard drives that are the same size. With this method of data storage, you will still retain most of the hard drive space of the original drives, but if one drive crashes, there is enough data on the other 2 drives to do a full restore of all files. This is available on the MacPro desktops that cost somewhere around 50,000 dollars.

To answer your question, yes, you can use file scavenger on internal drivees. they are for any hard drives or anything that stores data (even works for flash drives so that pic you thought you deleted can be recovered!)

a few years ago, my hd lost its partition - the data was physically still there but the "address" to the data was lost so the pc couldn't locate the section of the hd where the data is. anyway, the program i used a few years ago was file scavenger and i got most of my data back. The guy Luis on the other forum used file scavenger as well and got all his data back. there are other tons of other programs out there that does the same thing. with file scavenger, the trial version will let you see what you can recover and let you recover them in very small file sizes (i think like 64k or smaller), which is practically unusable. but the full version will let you recover everything - so if you think it'll work for you, then you should get it.

fyi - all an external drive is is an internal drive crammed into an external case. if you take the drive out from a case, you can connect it to a PC with the same cables as you could w/ internal drives. it's just that the design of most external drives on the market is very problematic. they don't have active cooling so many hard drives eventually die from the heat. plus owners throwing them around.

Some of them are good men, but in the name of goodness, they cause most of the suffering in the world. They're the judges, the meddlers. And, son, never trust a man who drinks but refuses to get drunk. They're usually afraid of something deep down inside, either that they're a coward or a fool or mean and violent. You can't trust a man who's afraid of himself. But sometimes, son, you can trust a man who occasionally kneels before a toilet. The chances are that he is learning something about humility and his natural human foolishness, about how to survive himself. It's damned hard for a man to take himself too seriously when he's heaving his guts into a dirty toilet bowl."

Re: I don't fucking believe this!

this is strange. while reading this, one of my computers also decided to reveal some bad blocks to me. it seems as if nothing is lost yet, but that's usualy just the start.

this is the fourth hard drive over the past year. i don't know what brand to by any more, it seems like they all just build hard drives for light usage these days. considering the sizes this is rather ridiculous...

if they weren't that expensive, i'd go for some scsi hardware. there's a good reason they build these into servers (apart from the additional security of RAID) - scsi hard drives usually have a much longer expected lifetime, and they are built for 24/7 uptime... but i guess that's also where the price comes from...
