havent had a problem with hd´s at the moment!....
but sorry for your troubles!....
just one time a fucking friend told me that if he can used my computer to format a disket and told him yes, and fucking bastard format my partition with all my music with around 170gb i so fucking hate him at that moment he didnt go to my house for around 2 months!
If not RAID, I might look into gettng one of these next:
You stick your SATA / e-SATA 3.5" hdd into it like a toaster. It's hot swappable, so you can keep stacks of hdds around like the ol' zip drives

I got pics and video. But I will upload them in the morning. I need to smoke this nice phat joint and just close my eyes and replay the amazingness in my head.
this is strange. while reading this, one of my computers also decided to reveal some bad blocks to me. it seems as if nothing is lost yet, but that's usualy just the start.
this is the fourth hard drive over the past year. i don't know what brand to by any more, it seems like they all just build hard drives for light usage these days. considering the sizes this is rather ridiculous...
if they weren't that expensive, i'd go for some scsi hardware. there's a good reason they build these into servers (apart from the additional security of RAID) - scsi hard drives usually have a much longer expected lifetime, and they are built for 24/7 uptime... but i guess that's also where the price comes from...
i think solid state drive are the wave of the future. the current models are too small in capacity and too expensive. but wait til solid states get to like 100-500 gb at affordable prices. you can toss these around, they are faster, and lighter. can't wait.
I bought an external HDD to back my shit up 500 gb for 100 euros not bad...saves time and money in the long run.
I recommend all take steps to insuring their music collection doesn't get fried for the good of the humanity.
7200rpms abot 12cm width and 22cm length...not big not small...decent size decent price...

What model is that? The Maxtor I had was a BRICK. Think it was the One Touch or something. 500GB too. Yours is much sleeker.

SSD's are currently running around the 128GB mark...yes they are still expensive as hell, but reports and hard drive technology based on the original revolutions would indicate a possible TB SSD within the next 5-7 years

That's what I thought too, but I swapped another hdd into the casing and that was fine. Swapped my dead hdd into a different casing and it stayed dead.
didn't actually try inside the system itself? Then again, if it doesn't spin up at all, power connection died, or some kind of electric shock occurred (doesn't take much of that to kill a HD)

No I couldn't try inside the system as I'm using a notebook ... this was an external drive. Yeah platter not spinning at all ... sigh.

That software has saved me from several corruptions/crashes over the years whereas I ended up losing just a minimal amount of data (then cleaned it up and backed it up )
agreed if there is any life left in a HD get data back is great...
also for any linux people ddrescue is far and away the best way to save a drive ... TRUST ME. it will work with any os... you just need to boot in linux and use ddrescue to copy over block by block one drive to another.
as for reliability ironically enough hitachi proves out to be the best followed by seagate and WD. and for my money i would stay the hell away from usb drives (unless its SSD). the raid controllers in those fucking usb drives seem to fry the drives. whether its power spikes, mounting/unmounting or shitty controllers... they blow.... pop open your pc and add a drive imo.
and ive had bad luck w/ lacies too .... seagate usb ftw
this comes from someone who has cycled thru about 500 drives in a year... using all kinds of controllers and shipping them all over the world. through bumps and bruises hitachi kick ass... the 500s proved to be fucking champions... the 750's i havent had as much experience with but... fuck yea on hitachi.
cant say much on the usb end, dont like em... hate how people just unplug em, the abuse catches up imo ... and the raid cards are shite.
