i don't know about you guys, but i've had a seagate 250gig external and i'll never buy another seagate product again. This thing is always crapping out on me when trying to add or remove files from this thing.

How did you recover them? The hdd just happen to work internally?

Those usb external drives are just internal drives fitted with a power cord and a usb 2 plugin.
So basically i took the drive itself connected the power and other cable to the drive the pin setting was already set as a secondary drive.
Another fact is that my drive was not spinning either after the crash i think it was caused by a power outage i had at my place this probably caused a cicuit problem on the usb drive.

Anyway it worked as an internal drive i just copied everything to a new drive i had purchased.

Re: I don't fucking believe this!

Hey guys - I remembered this threat from a while back because my Macbook hard drive dies (under a fucking year old! Has left the house exactly ONCE) and it has a year's worth of pictures from my son on it. Called that data recovery places and I will be goddamned if I have to pay 800-2000 dollars to get my pics back. Biggest irony of all? Backup drive was in the mail.

SO - this brings me to a related but different question - do you guys just leave your computers running all the time or shut them off at night? An old tech support guy told me that the heating/cooling cycle was thought to age the drives faster, but he always shuts his shit down.

                    What do you guys do?

And thanks for all the help for data recovery - hope I can do it.

I always shut my computer off overnight unless i leave it down loading something.
I did read somewhere that the bigger the HD, the bigger the risk of failure which seems to be the current trend here. Iv got a couple 300gb drives which have been fine for ages.

get an old pc, strip out the internals, use dual gigabit cards (saw some for like $16 on newegg), setup windows 2000 / 2003 in raid5 and dump all your old HDs in them.

you may need to get a new mobo that has 6 - 8 S-ATA plugs but thats probably where your exp will end.

or just go out and buy a drobo.

Heat is always a major cause in their breakdown. I wouldn't leave the external drives running if I don't need them. And these days I'm looking at external enclosures with fans. But if the enclosures are badly designed, you're still fucked anyway.
