We admit, this seems a bit unlikely, but TUAW is reporting that the next iteration of Apple’s OS X operating system could debut as early as next week. According to the site, Apple is preparing to seed developers with an early version of the new OS. 10.6 will reportedly focus “solely on security and stability”, with little to no emphasis placed on groundbreaking new features. The early seeding would apparently placing 10.6 on track for a January ‘09 public launch, concurrent with Apple’s annual Macworld Expo. This will be Apple’s first Intel-only operating system, placing another nail in the PowerPC coffin.

LMAO... um, I seriously doubt it.

It might be a new OS for the iphone, but I doubt it.

Edit: the all intel thing makes sense though... we shall see.

Arstechnica reports on more details about the next major version of Mac OS X (10.6). According to the news site, the next version of Mac OS X will indeed be an Intel-only release and that it is code named "Snow Leopard".

Ars can also confirm the expected release target of January 2009 as well as a focus on speed and stability:

"Snow Leopard is currently on track to come out during next January's Macworld, and it will not contain major OS changes. Instead, the release is heavily focused on performance and nailing down speed and stability. "

The author points to future mobile devices as the driving force behind this focus on performance and stability. There is also a suggestion that Apple may move Mac OS X 10.6 to "Cocoa-only", but the full meaning of this remains vague:

"There may be some disagreement here as to what exactly "Cocoa-only" means, so take that into account when thinking about this. For example, Apple may only axe Carbon UI stuff."

Does "intel-only" now mean you won't have to jump through hoops to do a test install on a dummy PC at home before falling in love with the OS and buying the next gen macboop pro ?

I just LOVED the new functionality of Parallels where you can actually have Windows start button at the bottom of the screen and the MAC bar from the bottom lodges onto the right of the screen

Nah it probably means Apple is gonna stop supporting Power PCs ... they're very aggressive when it comes to moving forward.

Yup, my boss just got a copy. Interesting. I have no idea what features will be new yet, but will keep you posted.

Not suppose to be much new features? Everything I've read talks about performance and security. In fact it doesn't sound like an update we should pay for.
