i watched him on the daily show last night. some of the shit he was saying meant that he had no clue about religion or what it means, just the vast concepts.

it's amazingly hypocritical that the liberals fight for rights for every group known, but when it comes to someone having religious views they are cataloged as heretic or insane.

huh? i watched the same thing, i would love some concrete examples of where you thought he was off base. the guy is pretty damn well versed in religion, he makes fun of it on a regular basis. if he was saying things that were inaccurate, he'd have people jumping all over him left and right.

ok for example: if God really exists and he is really all powerful why does he need a prophet to speak to his people. why can't he just say: i am God, listen to me?
The building block of religion is Faith, idiot (not you, maher)

Also the whole thing with why Jesus was sent to Earth to die, he just doesnt understand the reason behind it, albeit a religious reason.

I'll give him one thing: when he was talking and was saying that God and Jesus are the same being, that is something that I also disagree with as there are also many instances in the Bible where it is shown that they are different beings. I and my religion believe that God, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost are 3 different beings.

he lampooned faith. either previous to this statement, or after it. to paraphrase "its like as soon as you say 'faith', any rational argument can get thrown out the window. 'faith' is a magic bullet that the religious use to avoid having to answer questions about their religion".

my personal view: yes you have 'faith' in something...doesn't mean its right, or any better than any other view. this whole idea of 'we're right, you're wrong' (pretty much the tenant of every major world religion) is so absurd as to not even need to be argued about. its nonsense, because there is no way to prove it.

parts of the rest of his comments...definitely tounge in cheek. he was being facetious to try and highlight some of the more rediculous aspects of all world religions. he picked christianity because he was speaking to an american audience...

and he also did point out that he is not an athiest. he said there might be a god...and there might not. he doesnt know, and neither can anyone else with any certainty. this premiss of 'faith' that organized religion uses to get their followers in line is the real culprit. the agents of religion are the real problem. you feel free to believe whatever you want, i'll do the same. just don't expect me to live my life according to someone elses religious views.

i'm not trying to inflict on you my faith or my religious views. all i was saying is that's why christians believe God speaks through a prophet, it's so that faith can be exercised. whatever his or anyones opinions on faith or God or religion are, the fact remains that if you ask any religious person why God doesnt speak to them directly they will tell you its because we need to have faith. so his comment was stupid.

he also said he's not an atheist because that would mean aknowledging that there is a God and he doesnt know. a little tricky wording from him.

i wasnt trying to argue my religion or why religion is true or right. i was just saying he shouldnt be talking about something if he doesnt understand it or the reasons behind it.

no one said you were...his comment was that the idea of 'faith' is stupid, and he provided a fairly valid reason for it. 'faith' isn't a valid argument for anything. its like a petulant child responding to a question by saying "just because". you can't have a rational argument with someone who's response to questions they can't answer is 'because i have faith'. you really don't read people's responses do you?

i'm willing to put money down that he knows more about religion than the both of us. you need to read up on him, watch some more of his commentary and stand-up before you rush out and say he doesn't understand. cause he does.

I'll start from the end. I guarantee I know more about religion than both of you.

Second. God and Faith are interconnected. Therefore, if God would come down and speak to us, then faith wouldnt be necessary. If he truly looked and tried to understand religion, he wouldnt ask why God would need a prophet because he knew that to believe in God faith is required. So yeah that's why christians believe God doesnt speak to us and he would know that. Regardless of what he thinks of God, faith, etc. Its the same with him asking why Christ would die for us? Well sure it doesnt make sense to him and he can mock it, but look at what christians believe in and it's right there.

I agree with ya man. I saw the daily show the other night and Bill maher didn't impress me either. Its very easy to poke fun or ridicule a religion or faith, and Its also easy to not abide by anything and just live your life. Trying to uphold a certain lifestyle according to a certain faith is hard these days. People that don't have a particular faith will always have a hard time understand those that do.

I thought Bills comment about" why doesn't God just come down and show himself",etc, etc was evident that he really doesn't get it. I am not here to question peoples beliefs and non beliefs, but seeing the constant bombardment against people of any faiths is rediculous sometimes. On the other hand I do understand a lot of the criticism, especially with how most religions have been hijacked by leaders for personal gains and what not. But to think those jackasses represent the faith itself is ignorance.

As for myself, I am not going to let Bill maher or any one else affect what i believe or how I believe it. straight up
