    any cyclists/fixed gear riders?

I used to talk all kinds of shit about fixed gear when I was in the states, as I rode around on my standard road setup. When I came here to Japan I decided to give the whole fixed gear thing a whirl. After 6 months of riding it, I'm not really sure. It's nice for it's simplicity, and it develops good pedaling habits, as well as increasing strength, but I'm not really sold on the whole concept. My grief is having to watch your lean angle while cornering to avoid hitting your pedals on the ground, not having faster gears once you get up to speed, and not being able to coast, especially downhill.

I'm not sure how pervasive the popularity of these types of bikes is outside of San Francisco (my home), and NYC, so maybe nobody knows what I'm talking about.

Anyhoo, any other cyclists in here ?

And here's the bike I'm riding now:

I just don't get the fixed gear thing. Why would you want to take such a step back in technology?

That's what I always said, how can you argue with mechanical advantage higher speed potential ?

But I do think it has it's benefits. Like I mentioned before, it teaches you good pedaling technique which really is important, and it makes you quite strong because you're always accelerating out of a tall gear. Also it's nice and simple, doesn't need to be adjusted or anything like that.

And the other thing that many fixed gear riders like is just the feeling of it. It forces you to ride in a different style, and makes you feel at bit more connected to the bike. If you like cycling, I do think it's a worthwhile thing to give a try.
