Hell to the yes! Most of the time, the track wasn't even written on with pen, and you pretty much had to guess what it was or who it was from...Good shit.

        Re: What do you think?

there is a TON of great house and deep house out there right now, from tribal balaeric to techy shit.

most of the stuff filed under "progressive" on all sites/shops tends to be utter shit though. mostly it ends up being trance or really really cheesy songs.

also, the breaks scene is ripping in all aspects IMO.

          Re: What do you think?

i have loads of different feelings about this personally, people all have different tastes.....music was something i studied for many years and i dont really like all types of music as i,m sure you feel the same way but u have to agree with me when i say that other people will like what u dont and hate what u do....its getting to the stage now where anyone can do it which is fine as its a stimulant for the brain which can be an exceptionally great thing but most people who are putting out records are only interested in money these days which is railroading the whole thing into the sound that makes money which for some people who happen to be a little more educated in music look @ this sound with disgust, you just have to accept that things change and move on, if that wernt the case we'd all be sitting here still banging sticks on rocks and stuff

What makes you think that i'm "young". I've probably been dj'ing longer than a lot of people on this board and I've been around long enough to know that there has been more garbage thats been coming out in the last few years than there was when I first started mixing. Beatport alone adds a few thousand new releases daily. Of those few thousand releases I would say that 90% of that is absolute shit. I spend at least an hour a day looking for music and I'm lucky if I find five solid tracks a week. Who the fuck are you to tell me that I don't take the time to find the "gems"? I know a gem when I hear one and there hasn't been a lot of them latley.

                Chill man.

So when did you start DJing, and what kind of tunes do you consider gems, compared to the newer gems you found in recent years, and the ones you think are shit?

I'm quite curious to understand where you're coming from since music is so subjective.

And this topic has come up to many times, and I've come to the conclusion that a lot of producers these days are not musically trained, or their productions lack musicality (all about some beats and effects), their basslines have no rhythm besides giving the producers something to hang some effects on. Music these days is so pared down, they're like skeletons.

HOWEVER, that said, I've also come to the conclusion that a lot of music that WE LIKE or think are great, has to do with sentimentality and when we heard them. These music will always sound great or have a special place in our hearts thanks to time.

So sometimes, bearing all that in mind, sometimes I think we might be a bit harsh on what we hear these days, cos times change, taste change, it isn't the same as when we discovered our 'gems.'

when vinyl was the only medium, it required record companies to really hunt down what was good, try it out, and get feedback on it. thus, with the vinyl medium, the quality of every record was very high. Now that just about any track that is ever mixed down on a computer can be found on the internet...the number of shit tunes goes up, and quality, while available, is nonetheless way harder to find.

who wants to spend 20 hours on beatport just to find 5 good tunes? tunes that will be outdated in weeks time. Just not efficient it seems.
THANK YOU!!!!! Thats exactly what i'm trying to say!

I started mixing in 2000 back when the way you could buy records at a local record shop. I was really into a lot of stuff back then. I was into all kinds of stuff back then. Everything from what H-Foundation was playing to Sasha & Digweed to Miguel Migs and everything in between. I picked up all kinds of good stuff. I don't remember the names of a lot of tracks because it's been a while since I've blown the dust of my vinyl and because some of my best records were white labels.

I can appreciate a good track even if it's not something I would necessarily play myself and I also understand that times do change and so do particular sounds. I personally think that majority of the music that's being released today has no soul. In my opinion since Electro took over (especially) the music has a real "cheesy, clubby, party music" feel to it. Or the Minimal stuff just sounds like "blipity bleepy" noise to me.

I've never disagreed that there isn't any good music anymore. The is definitely some quality stuff being released. Its just that I think that that stuff is far and few between.

                        Re: What do you think?

Hate to break it to you WOW but some of us on here have been listening to this stuff pre-2000 ... 2000 wasn't that long ago when talking about prog! Are you stuck in the deep/dark prog phase? A lot of people coming from 00-01 (I'm not excluded!) don't like it when electro influenced the sound and still wished for the good ol days. Especially if 2000 was your first intro to prog, that certainly left a mark.

And if you can't give us some track names to know what you're on about, it's just your word that music is shit these days!
