I've just found out some very sad news - one of the most respected and loved pianists on the planet died last week at the premature age of 44 in a scuba diving accident in Stockholm.
The term genius can often be bandied around without merit, but for many Esbjörn re-wrote the jazz trio rulebook drawing on influenced from dance music and rock, to produce a diverse range of truly magical and beautiful music that few could ever come close to.
I was fortunate enough to get into the Esbjörn Svensson Trio (EST) just as they were breaking in the UK, and have seen them live on numerous occasions when they were at their awe-inspiring best. The legacy of music left behind is timeless, and fortunately it looks like a new album had been finished before this tragedy.
I met Esbjörn during EST's last UK tour when I got a CD signed for my girlfriend. He wasn't just a musical genius but a fun and kind person, taking the time to make sure he spelt Jasmine's name properly and ask me about her. He leaves behind a wife and 2 children, which makes his untimely death all the more distressing.
For anyone that genuinely loves music I can't recommend enough that you check out Esbjörn's work. Here's a flavour of what EST were all about:
