just using my mbp speakers I could hear a noticeable difference, especially at the end when the horn-like instrument is played

I can tell the difference. They both suck IMO. Wav. is the way to go if you are a serious dj. On a big system you can hear the transition from an mp3 dj to a wav dj. i hear it all the time.

I couldn't tell at first because it was on my laptop speakers, but once I plugged in my headphones it was night and day. How you listen to music is a big factor in determining how good a file sounds, if you just listen to your music with crappy laptop speakers or the cheap ear buds that same with your ipod you'll never notice the difference most likely.

But until he does that you couldn't tell what format he was using. It's his own fault for changing the format he uses during a set, he should stay consistent start to finish.

^naw, i meant i often hear the difference between mp3 and Wav. tracks when one dj's tracks are mp3 and then they hand over the decks to another dj with wav. files and whithin the first mix you can allready hear the difference in thickness on the system.

to be honest when i buy tracks i always get the 320mb version as they have a massive difference to the quality of the whole set,but thats through my soundsystem and the huge speakers... i havent tried the two samples through my mixer,maybe like that difference would be noticeable, but through my headphones they did hear the same. maybe my headphones suck...

seriously if you DJ for fun or as a pro artist and you can't tell the difference then get a different job! or find another hobby
