    Sasha + Ableton Live

ok, take it easy on the new person, but i am just curious since i dont know but how does Sasha (or anyone else who uses it) incorporate LIVE into his sets..
is it like Final Scratch? is everything pre programmed? are they full tracks in the program OR has every track been cut up into many loops?

Please educate.... (and is this thread even in the right section)

It's basicly a program that lets you 'Remix on the fly'

It's not like FS in the way you mix the records together physically. It's all done on the screen of the laptop your using.

In the program you can do a hell of alot to the track that you are playing (like has been already mentioned in the other thread - looping)

Your actually editing/remixing the track as your playing it.

And all the tracks are .wav files on the computer.

So all you need to bring to the gig is the laptop. And that is what is so appealing to alot of the DJ's who are taking this up.

    Hope that explains enough.

        Re: Sasha + Ableton Live

        Thank u for the response,

so i can throw in 2 different tracks in the program and the program will mix them for me? at which point within the program i can manipulate which parts of the tracks i want to make longer or cut out?
and i am guessing i can have more than 2 tracks going?
so basically, u use no cd players no turntables just a laptop?

also, what section is the other thread that u mentioned?

Thanks again for ure help, it sounds interesting.

You read it already you plonker

You can have 10 tracks going at one time if you wish. Its actually a sequencer so the possibilities are endless. You could for instance have a track playing, and put samples over the top while the next track is being mixed in. And that track thats being mixed in could also have an effect going ontop of it (Reverb for example)

Does it mix it for you? not as such. More that you place the next track in the right place for the program to play it for you. You have to go through all your tracks beforehand and make them the same tempo, so they can be mixed into each other (this is the only pain with the program)

You can edit the track whenever you wish to, while its playing or before it's playing. You could also be editing the next 3-4 tracks from the one that's currently playing as well.

And no. No CD players or Turntables are needed.

I've only ever done one chilled out mix on it before, I really want to get into it more. It is certainly the future.

And i'm saying that with 6000 Records sitting in my bedroom.

Hawtin is still using final scratch I think, using 2 computers though. He has HIS OWN VERSION of an Allen & Heath mixer...

              That guy is amazing.

                Re: Sasha + Ableton Live

the only problem i have with embracing this new technology is the fact that it COSTS money. alot of money especially on my salary.
Hawtin has 2 laptops in that photo and who knows how many other gadgets=$$$$$
                2 pionner cdj's/dvj's or whatever = $$$$

I dont mean to sound like a whiny bitch because i know a lot of people in the world have a lot more problems than i do.

but in the DJ WORLD to sound new and exciting it seems that u need the latest stuff. I have heard from many people that just seeing a guy "spinning records" is "boring".

just writing all of this i have realized that i NEED TO GET ANOTHER JOB.

spinning records is boring? Dont think so at all.

Your right about the technology though. It's expensive. But worth it.

I think the basic requirements now for somebody who REALLY wants to get on in music is CD decks at least. With digital DL's you can get the best music really easy these days. Dont be sad about it because it's possible to find so much more great music now that everythings gone digital.

                    Re: Sasha + Ableton Live

finding the music is great i must admit... i spent 100$ CDN on Beatport the other week and i cant even remember how many records i bought where as before i would have bought maybe 6 or 7 vinyl records on that budget.

                        Re: Sasha + Ableton Live

I saw Sasha play last Friday and I saw him still using CDs.

As for being a "bedroom dj", I find it easier still to get the best music on vinyl. I've tried digital downloads, but usually I see the things I want on vinyl first.

And yes, it's very expensive for this new equipment. However, if I could digitial download everything I wanted then that would be much cheaper than buying vinyl then I could justify buying the CDJs.

Have to agree re: CDJ's. Most of the digital downloads offered are of unsigned tracks or tracks that have been released for a while so that vinyl sales are not hurt.

as great as ableton is, i still cant stand the thought of someone not actually required to put the effort into MIXING.

                            maybe thats just me...

Agreed. Mixing is what helps make a dj who he is and track slection as well. But djs that can mix to ones that can't is a big difference. This program pretty put everyone on the same playing field for the most part. You don't have to be able to mix just pick good records. Which sucks. I have worked hard to try to mix tracks and other stuff.
