    Re: Sasha + Ableton Live

i can see it now my bedroom setup will have to consist of :
    2 Techniks 1200
2 Pioneer CDj 1000/ hell, why not maybe the dvj's i can do visuals on my wall
    1 pioneer 600 mixer
1 pioneer efx 500 OR i hear the 1000 is coming out soon.
1 laptop(preferably MAc) to run Live OR Final Scratch.

AND a whole bunch of accessories that i dont even know much about yet... cycloops, etc.
I saw Zabiela a couple of weeks ago and he had added another peice of equipment to his setup, i asked a friend what it was but i cant remember right now, i think it was somekind of sampler that was fairly inexpensive, and i dont think it was cycloops???

well, atleast i have the tables and the mixer for now.

but using ableton, cdjs, final scratch, or whatever will seperate the dj's that can just play good records, to the ones that have the ingenuity to sample and remix on the fly. i mean, i love mixing vinyl, but once the beats are matched, there isnt much to do, maybe if you have a good mixer and can run some effects and what not. but with 1200's, cdj's and a good mixer, the possibilities are endless.

not dissing anything mate.. but my point is with the new technology in conjunction with the old school vinyl decks, you can just take it that much further.

don just quote part of my post you BASTARD! lol

you've obviously not heard a proper Live PA then.

                Re: Sasha + Ableton Live

personally seeing someone sit in front of a lap top and point and click for a few hours is just totally uninspiring and seems very impersonal. while i dont doubt the potential of things like ableton, im not interested what so ever in seeing a dj live that strictly uses his laptop. mix cd's and comps are obviously a different animal.

am i the last of dying breed who swears by vinyl?

I own Alberton and its soooo easy to use, i also cut parts of tracks using sound forge and then mix them all together to make some very nice sounds

Well, it of course depends on whether you want to see a dj or hear a dj... Watching somebody sitting behind a comp is not interesting, I agree, but if the music is so good you get lost in it, you don't waste your time watching what the dj does.

                            Re: Sasha + Ableton Live

New technology, like Ableton, should free up a DJs time for edits on the fly, FX, loops from many records etc. If they're just using it so they can get extra trashed it's not so good.

Technology can get a bit much sometimes - Eric Morillo doing a filter sweep on his Kaoss pad every couple of minutes, just because he can rather than because it sounds good.

Personally, I can't see the big DJs sticking with vinyl for that much longer. It's too heavy and baggage handlers can't resist the sight of an international DJ's tunes passing them by.

                            cheers, RH
