That system is pretty similar to what Maximum PC put in the Dream Machine this year. Biggest difference is the CPU. They got a 3.6GHz Prescott up to 3.97GHz without liquid cooling, which I thought was amazing.

Yes you can O/C the Intel chips on air, never debated that... I have a 3.2 thats running at 3.5 (was previously at 3.72 but because Far Cry was acting like a bitch I had to drop it).

The reason I went with a cheaper CPU is because you can bump a 2.8 to nearly 3.5 on air.... and so the the extent that the 2.8 can be O'Ced is way more than a 3.5 / 3.6 can, hence I went with the 2.8

Yeah, I got you. I wasn't trying to debunk your claim...just wondering. Any idea what it is about the 2.8s that makes them so overclocking friendly? I've heard the EE are next to useless in that area. I was thinking the extra cache would cause the core to heat up too much when it reached a certain temp, but I'm not really sure.

Is your 3.2 a Prescott? My brother is trying to finalize his new system and is having a hard time decieding on a CPU. Everything I've read or heard about Prescotts said they are not worth a damn at 3.2. Their 30 stage pipeline is just too much to keep going at that speed.

Maybe that's why you've got it at 3.5. Maybe I just answered my own question. Either way...what fan\heatsink are you using?

Ok, you guys definitely know your computers and sounds like you'll create your own. But, what's the best gaming pc to buy for those of us less educated and don't want to know that much? I only care for gaming, internet browsing, and music.

For example, what's the best video card right now? What's better AMD chip or Intel? And should I go buy a Dell XPS or Alienware computer?

It all depends on so many variables. Most importantly to start, what is your budget for this PC?

Best video card is another variable. See there is the absolute best of the best, which would be the nVidia 6800 Ultra Extreme, but you can't find it around right now because the very few of them in existence, are owned already. Next best would be arguably the 6800 Ultra, with the ATI varient very close behind. But yet again, that ATi varient is pretty much non-existent. Then there is the 6800 GT which comes with exactly the same configuration as the 6800 Ultra, but underclocked a bit. Which is easily enough tweaked.

If your budget is high, I'd say go with the Dell XPS out of the two you mentioned, but your still going to spend a lot more to get the same thing built for you by a local machine builder in town. Which is what I recomend for anyone in your shoes. They will warrenty their work, and every part on your machine will have a vendor warranty of 3 years.

Just tell me your budget, and someone can give you the specs you will want in order to fall into that price range. You can take all of those specs to a system builder in your city and away you go.
