Norton Ghost. I've been using it for many, many years without any problems.

Yes. And it's damn fast. Just try it. You'll thank me later.

Off topic - Did your sister find you the PS3? There are a lot of them all over the LA area right now.

              Re: Msn

The newer versions, since '03 I think, need a real serial number and have to be registered. I don't remember the details. I just use an older one, send an image to another connected hard drive and I don't even need to be present when it happens.

                  Re: Msn

Theoretically no need to re-register, because your serial is stored on your hdd as well, usually as some sort of license file or in the registry, and norton ghost basically copies everything on it as is.

But in practice, software that looks at your hardware and requires activation, such as Windows, can be a bit tricky.

After you've imaged your setup to a new hdd, you most probably have to re-activate Windows again, especially if the hardware has changed.

In my Win XP days, there is a utility called sysprep that prepares Windows for this. So when you boot up your image on a new system or hardware, Windows goes through the motions of activation (IIRC) and redetecting your hardware for drivers.

Win Vista has a Complete PC Backup utility that does imaging like Ghost.
