Its is known that Lebanon has been into civil unreast for more than 30 years, and during this period law was almost inexistant and "chaos" was the prevailing status quo in this country. And as a direct consequence, one issue was and still is, the deposit and massing of the city's garbage and wastes.
Lebanon doesnt have a waste recycling plant, and the city's garbage has been piled up somewhere on the coast of the capital for more than 30 years now, and with time this "pile" became a mountain, literally! Since 10 years now the authorities have been thinking hard how to solve this issue and the best plan they came up with is to create a golf course out of this moutain coz they can't build on wastes, and it is known that waste helps grass grow, hence this idea of making a professional gulf course on the sea, which Lebanon doesn't have yet. In the meantime Lebanon keeps on living this ecological and environmental disaster!
Now the important detail in this story is that this moutain of wastes happens to be right next to the fuel deposits of the country: 500 meters away there are like 20 huge fuel tanks that are the main and only deposit of fuel reserves for the need of the nation; these tanks are close to the sea because thay are filled by fuel tankers from abroad since lebanon doesnt have its own fuel.
This week, the tempurature in Lebanon got really high, very hot! And by consequence the chemicals inside the wastes reacted to the sun, and what did we get?
2 major identical fires that broke up with 72 hours time.
Another important detail is that between that moutain of garbage and the fuel tanks deposits there is a road that passes through, a road that is packed with traffic during rush hours. And these major fires broke twice at around 16:00 where offices start to close and rush hour starts on the streets.
The firefighters fought that fire twice, but that moutain of garbage is still there and intact since both fires didn't even consume a small part of it, that mountain is HUGE.
The population kinda panicked coz had the fire reached the fuel tanks all Beirut would have blown up in pieces...
The issue is not solved, we are not out of danger yet since summer is at its peak right now, and that threat is present more then ever in the local population's minds.
