Is there anyone here that honestly believes that Obama’s energy plan is to have us all keep our tires inflated? Is there anyone here that honestly believes that keeping our tires inflated is even an important part of Obama’s energy plan? This whole flap really highlights how ridiculous our political discourse has gotten, and how disingenuous talking points can be.
FFS, McCain agrees with Obama that keeping our tires inflated is a good idea – as does the Department of Energy’s own website and uber-liberal NASCAR, and yet the RNC gleefully passes out tire gauges. I’m positively stunned at the immaturity. It’s madness.
People always say that they want their politicians to focus on the issues, offer more than sound-bites, and engage in civil discourse, but anyone that purports to believe this and sides with the RNC this year is officially a hypocrite. The “Celebrity” ad was one thing and “The One” was another, but apart from being something you would expect from a 10-year old, the tire gauge thing is just intellectually dishonest. It is literally impossible to hear what Obama actually said and conclude that his proposal for getting off of foreign oil is to establish the Department of Tire Inflation and make sure everyone is fully aired up.
The irony, I think, is that if a person were to objectively look at the McCain energy plan and the Obama energy plan, they’re not even that far apart. Both are in favor of doing more to produce our own energy through a variety of different means including drilling for more oil, alternatives like wind and solar power, etc. – there might be difference in emphasis, but they are really pretty close, I think. There are some differences of opinion in how we finance that, but the ultimate goal is pretty much the same.
To the end of meaningful political discussion, I have to offer a rare tip of the cap for CNN, which has begun a segment each morning where they just excerpt a candidate’s speech for a few minutes so you actually get to hear what they have to say, in context, rather than just hearing a 10-15 second clip. Nice move, hope it sticks around.
