toasty and i converse via PM's on topics where i avoid my traditional incindiery comments. i wanted to share this. it hit me as the perfect explanation of how a man who had the highest approval rating ever for a sitting president on sept 10 has become a person whom the world would cheer in death. concise, exact, and eloquent.
I view the role of president (the actual role of president as envisioned by the Constitution, not the King-ly role that Bush has granted himself) as equal parts setter of broad public policy, liaison with the rest of the world, legislative whip, figurehead, and commander-in-chief. I do not expect the president to be drafting legislation or getting into the minutiae of the language of bills. As a matter of fact, I think Bush’s attempt to graft his own personal interpretation onto bills in his ubiquitous signing statements to be a clear violation of separation of powers. I’m not 100% sure how you come down on this, but the fact that you’re calling for this level of detail suggests to me that you have different expectations of the executive branch. If you’re looking for a politician to set out specifically what he or she intends to do, you’re likely to be waiting for a while IMO. Just not realistic in this day and age. Regardless, I’ll go through each of these roles seriatim and let you know why I like Obama.
