Re: Russia attacks Georgia
^ funny? 1,500 people are dead overnight. They've got russian tanks and planes storming into the sovereignty. This is really, really, really bad news for relations between russia, the us, and the rest of europe.you could put an Emfire release on for 2 minutes and you would be a sleep before it finishes - Chunky

Re: Russia attacks Georgia
I don't have any particular love for the Russians, and their response against Georgian civilians is looking disproportionately harsh. But it's worth keeping in mind that it apparently was the Georgians who started it this time by invading South Ossetia - clearly hoping to benefit from the timing of the olympic games. Also, keep in mind that South Ossetians generally don't like Georgia and don't want to be taken over by them. These people have hatred going back hundreds of years, and neither side is "innocent".
These are things that you won't see emphasized very much on yahoo or cnn, seeing as the United States is always somewhat at odds with Russia - and Georgia happens to be a loyal ally of the United States.mixes: www.waxdj.com/miroslavComment

Re: Russia attacks Georgia
a few years ago as the US was leading up to the war, I had the chance to talk to a military officer about his thoughts on going back to war...whether it was good that we were ousting saddam and whether it would preciptate into world war three. He told me that while Iraq will certainly be a big military event, he explained that he believed that world war three would begin in South Ossetia. So, to wake up to this yesterday was, for lack of better words, stunning.
anyways, i've been intently following the news briefings that have come out. i'll post more as they are published.you could put an Emfire release on for 2 minutes and you would be a sleep before it finishes - Chunky

Re: Russia attacks Georgia
Could the leaders of Georgia really be so stupid/naive into believing that Russia would not respond?
Or do you think this move by Georgia was more of a tactical one?
Just hope that all the killings stop.“A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murderer is less to fear.”

Makes you wonder, do you think that Georgia had some sort of reason to believe that the US and it's allies were going to step in and help?

Georgia's Power Play - and Gamble
Has Georgia Overreached in Ossetia?
It seems they were betting that they could quickly take South Ossetia by surprise while Putin and the rest of the world was fixated on the olympic games. I can't imagine that they didn't think Russia would retaliate, seeing as South Ossetians and Russians have strong ties. But perhaps the Georgians were hoping that US and EU diplomatic pressure might help them preserve their new status quo after they successfully blitzkrieged the region. The article also theorizes that Georgia's failed NATO bid also drove them towards this manner of taking matters into their own hands. Clearly, they miscalculated badly...
But again, one should keep in mind that, generally speaking, the Georgians and South Ossetians HATE each other and have been in ethnic conflict for over a century now. South Ossetia does not want to be under Georgian control. The Russians are brutal thugs, but the Georgians apparently made a unilaterally aggressive move that is unwelcomed by the South Ossetians.
This thread should really be titled: "Georgia Attacks South Ossetia; THEN, Russia Attacks Georgia".mixes: www.waxdj.com/miroslavComment

You can't have manslaughter without laughter.
"Son," he said without preamble, "never trust a man who doesn't drink because he's probably a self-righteous sort, a man who thinks he knows right from wrong all the time. Some of them are good men, but in the name of goodness, they cause most of the suffering in the world. They're the judges, the meddlers. And, son, never trust a man who drinks but refuses to get drunk. They're usually afraid of something deep down inside, either that they're a coward or a fool or mean and violent. You can't trust a man who's afraid of himself. But sometimes, son, you can trust a man who occasionally kneels before a toilet. The chances are that he is learning something about humility and his natural human foolishness, about how to survive himself. It's damned hard for a man to take himself too seriously when he's heaving his guts into a dirty toilet bowl."Comment

Re: Russia attacks Georgia
"has georgia overreached in ossetia?" what an absurd headline; ossetia is part of georgia. It would be like maine deciding to leave the Unitd eStates and give itself over to Canadian control, and the US military comes in to prevent this from happening. Overreached? Srsly?
also, reading between the facts, russia did want to punish georgia for seeking NATO status, and what better way to provoke a military response than by shooting down georgian military aircraft, and supplying dissident south ossetian rebels with arms and weapons which they could, and did, fire into georgia proper.
russia is also saber-rattling as against the czech republic, so far as intimating a nuclear response. don't listen to that propoganda bullshit that the russians are innocent on this. i see it as no different than an abusive husband who has gone to far and comes home to find his abused wife with a knife in her hand.you could put an Emfire release on for 2 minutes and you would be a sleep before it finishes - Chunky

Re: Russia attacks Georgia
I can see why he would argue that, given the oil pipeline through Georgia. I personally think World War III is more likely to begin somewhere between Israel and Iran.Last edited by Miroslav; August 10, 2008, 01:33:13 PM.mixes: www.waxdj.com/miroslavComment

Yes, everything you say about the Russians is true; they are thugs and they have a long-standing hatred of the Georgians. They are pissed about Georgia's NATO status, US support of Georgia, and the missile defense system. They are also pissed that they were forced to accept independence for Kosovo when South Ossetia was taken off the diplomatic table. And most importantly, they are pissed that the strategic oil pipelines in the region were built after the fall of the USSER through Georgia, and not through Russia. And they are now happy to use the situation to teach a brutal lesson to all of the former Soviet republics and to the West.
But at the same time, you can't just simply say "Ossetia should just be with Georgia". If you look back at Ossetian history you will find that the Ossetians in general have long-standing closeness with Russia and have struggled against Georgia for almost a century now. North Ossetia was a part of Russia dating back to the 1800s. When the Soviet Union came to power, North Ossetia stayed a part of Russia but South Ossetia was given as a prize to the Georgians - strongly influenced by the fact that Joseph Stalin was a Georgian. The South Ossetians didn't want to be under Georgian control and they fought for their independence as far back as 1918 (and lost).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Georgia...ict_(1918-1920)
As I've said, most South Ossetians have no love for the Georgians and would like to be free from them. By most accounts, South Ossetians identify with their North Ossetian counterparts in Russia and would like to be reunited with them. In every referendum held, even under international monitoring supervision, South Ossetians always overwhelmingly proclaim that they don't want to be a part of Georgia. They already fought a war against them in the early 1990s and broke away from full Georgian control, the result of which was an uneasy truce wherein South Ossetia had "quasi" independence (not recognized by most of the world) and Russian, Georgian, and Ossetian troops set up "peacekeeping" positions - sort of like the 38th parallel in Korea.
But Georgia has never forgotten South Ossetia and has longed to bring it back under its power. Mikheil Saakashvili, president of Georgia, campaigned under a promise to bring the two breakaway republics back. Now here's where it gets tricky... Who started the war? Was it the Russians, itching to fabricate an "excuse" via South Ossetia to stick it to the Georgians? Or was it the Georgians, hoping to successfully blitzkrieg South Ossetia under surprise cover of the olympic games.
We'll probably never know for sure and each side will argue against the other. But right now, it seems that Georgia was the aggressor in this round of fighting...in which case, yes, they grossly overreached.mixes: www.waxdj.com/miroslavComment

Re: Russia attacks Georgia
It's funny that the USA has been training the Georgian Army over the last few months and now an army of 21,000 is invading an army of 1 million. The real title should read "the USA/NATO invades Ossetia on first day of Olympics so nobody notices and then we can say the bad Russians invaded Georgia."
Cheney and the gang are masters of illusion..
Miroslav if you are grossly outnumbered and going to war that is not overreaching. Georgia would never have invaded Russia unless they have been told by NATO it is ok.. we have your back.. Russia could squash Georgia without even thinking about it.. Russia could realistically attack anyone now..Comment
