i'm kind of in the same situation as you. I stopped buyin vinyl like 3 years ago and switched to cd's and mp3's used together with final scratch and not so long ago i completly switched to laptop + traktor + controller. It is definatly cheaper, different way of mixing, but still great fun!

Using the software I can record to my hard drive in real time, so I no longer have to run lines from my mixer to my laptop. Doing it like this is so much easier. The software has more features than I care to mention and it can give new DJ's shortcuts. It will automatically beatmatch, but you still have to know what you're doing. Mixing cannot be computerized in my opinion. Mixing is an art and a skill that develops with time. Of course proper track selection is still organic...

It is different. The controller I use is like a mixer combined with the controls of a CD deck. Plus it has 6 programmable buttons per side (that I don't use yet).

The final scratch/serato scratch was like a middle point between the old school way and the computer software since you still had to use decks and beatmatch with your ears. I never bought a set but used them from time to time.

Since I don't really do this for money anymore I try to minimalize equipment as much as possible to keep costs low. But sometimes I wish I still had proper decks that I could play my vinyl on.
