Re: Antivirus 08 Virus
yes, wait a looong time.
Mac vs. PC.
"Help I clicked on something and it instalked inself, oh shit wtf"
Mac User " What's an EXE? *belly laughs*"
People dont understand that the UNIX file system isnt full of shit, and you cant just run some random shitty program and have it embed itself in the OS.
you'd have to have a serious rootkit for that to happen. This is the voice from planet love. Have no fear we are your friends. To bring peace and love to your world, we are sending you our very special agent. Her name is love love love...

Re: Antivirus 08 Virus
i got this shit!!! i downloaded something of a torrent site and as soon as i installed it avast popped up with sirens and a message, saying that it found a virus and then i had to choose from the options "delete" or "move to chest". every time i was choosing something the same message was popping up asking for the same thing. after a while another message popped up with a "antivirus 2008" logo and asked me if i wanted to delete some spyware it had found while all this time avast was going crazy!!! i thought it was a bit dodgy name for an antivirus program plus i couldnt remember installling it before.. as its not shown on the add remove programs, i looked on google and i found some information on how to remove it!! i ended it from the task manager, i deleted it from program files, from the start menu from registry... from anywhere i could find it! after i restarted my laptop everything was fucked up!!! files in different locations, different wallpaper on my desktop, even on the internet i was clicking from my bookmarks to a page and it was taking me to a different page!!! oh man i was proper pissed off!! good thing was that this was a new laptop so i didnt have installed loads of programs yet, so i formatted windows and put them again!!! never had another virus before so i dont know how nasty virus this is compared to others! it fucked up everything though!!Greeks don't fight like heroes, heroes fight like Greeks

Re: Antivirus 08 Virus
There is actually more security vulnerabilities in Mac than in XP or Vista, they are just not as frequently exploited. Think about it, a malcode writer be interested in targeting a *smaller* audience? If you are trying to steal passwords, credit card numbers or run a botnet it's just silly to go after the OS with relatively few users.
A/V is useless now a days. We submit at least 3 samples to an A/V vendors almost daily that they are not detecting. Code is being distributed on a per system basis, modified enough so that A/V signatures won't detect it.
If you want real protection scrap the A/V and go with application whitelisting. I run Faronics Anti-Executable. When you first install it, it inventories your system and only allows those exe already present to run. If you want to install something new, you turn it off and install then turn Anti-Executable on again. Not only will you be more protected but you will free up system resources that A/V is currently taking up. You could run both if you want though."They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security." -Benjamin FranklinComment

Re: Antivirus 08 Virus
Running an exe is not the only way to get compromised. There are driver level vulnerabilities which allow root access. The following was demonstrated at BlackHat a couple years ago:

Re: Antivirus 08 Virus
You do realize the first rootkit ever seen was on a Unix system, right (it was the replacement of the ls command)? Rootkits themselves do nothing other than hide stuff. In most cases hide a running process.

There are more levels of file based and security protection available to you. It's just not Inherently sloppy, like Windows.
