Live Recording From the Crowd

Hey guys i was at a gig, Red+Hed at academy in dublin last week and i noticed a guy in the crowd who seemed to be recording the mix onto his ipod.

Is this common or even possible? Would the quality of the recording be good? It would be a good idea to record like that. Ive heard a couple of mixes before which sound like they are from the crowd?

The sound quality normally wouldn't be that good. It will probably sound like it was recorded using 2 coconuts and a piece of string. Which is OK for a live act in the 80's, but these days ain't worth listening to unless your a hardened fan. There's a Sasha set from Dec 1999 which was recorded using the same method. But you are better off spending the night having s good time than recording it.

Some can be decent. But normally it sounds like a bunch of distorted bass and people screaming....Depending on the equipment used...If its a good setup, that's a different story...The guys that tape the Dave Matthews shows are out in the crowd a few rows back from the stage..Some of those recordings are awesome due to the fact that they are using high end equipment.

Well I'm heading to a gig tonight and was wondering whether it would be worth while at all to bring a recorder. I was gonna use a bog standard mp4 player but now i think ill just go and enjoy the night. It would be good if DJ's offered their set recording out at the end of a set.

Maybe by giving a web address or something.

Ive been to too many gigs that i can never get a hold of the set or tracklistings.

Funny enough i went to the same place last night where i saw the guy recording the mix and he was there again recording another mix.

I asked him about the resulting quality of the mixes and he said that they are pretty good. He uses an ipod???

So either the ipod has good recording quality or he is partially deaf!

Maybe its me but when people post YouTube videos from clubs recorded on their phones i really struggle to watch them. I see no point at all in recording it at all. The sound is always appalling. Just have a good night and don't bother

^^^you should ask sakio he seems to take recodings (video) of almost every gig and i think most of the time they sound pretty damn good.

Don't you love the ones where the music is not only unrecognisable but all the picture you get is the occasional blob of red or green on a black background and they post like, ten of them

Btw I think Sakio pods are too good for my old computer

Ye its pretty annoying having to wade through all the crap on youtube to come across some decipherable gigs. The daytime gigs turn out not so bad. I posted a couple of them from hifi a couple of years back and they were pretty damn good, considering i used a digital camera bought from lidl.

The m-audio recorder Shiva was loking at could to the trick - if you can get a decent small mic to pin on you and set noise sensitivity levels.

I recorded some live jazz gigs on a sony walkman (and then mini disc) and they always came out well. But that was in a proper concert hall or jazz club where the crowds are quiet.

i brought my camera (Sony DSC-T70) to the recent sasha digweed tour when they came through portland. recorded some 15 minute videos and the audio quality that came out of it was surprisingly good.

if i had known they were only going to play for ~2 hours, i would have recorded the whole thing... but i was expecting 4-5 hours worth

so is there a device where you can record a set "plugged" into the system (mixer or amp) and then record the crowd noise for a bit (like at a breakdown point of a track) then continue recording the set without the crowd noise????

You know, kinda like Radio 1 Essential Live mixes... Is there any device like that?
