    Troopergate

Emails related to firing from Palin to Walter Mongean have been produced to the Washington Post:

"This trooper is still out on the street, in fact he's been promoted," said a Feb. 7, 2007, e-mail sent from Palin's personal Yahoo account and written to give Monegan permission to speak on a violent-crime bill before the state legislature.

"It was a joke, the whole year long 'investigation' of him," the e-mail said. "This is the same trooper who's out there today telling people the new administration is going to destroy the trooper organization, and that he'd 'never work for that b****', Palin'.)"

I love how she put "investigation" in quotes. Nothing to see here folks, move along.

        This:
"Asked about the e-mails, Palin's campaign spokeswoman, Maria Comella, said that Palin was merely alerting officials to potential threats to her family and that there is no evidence that Palin ever ordered Wooten to be fired. "

        This:
"She cited Wooten's case as an example of violating the public trust. She recounted his transgressions, beginning with the killing of the cow moose using a permit obtained by his wife. Molly McCann, who uses her name from a previous marriage, was with Wooten at the time.
"He's still bragging about it in my hometown and after another cop confessed to witnessing the kill, the trooper was 'investigated' for over a year and merely given a slap on the wrist," the e-mail said. "Though he's out there arresting people today for the same crime!"

        And this:
"We can't have double standards. Remember when the death threat was reported, and follow-on threats from Mike that he was going to 'bring Sarah and her family down' -- instead of any reprimand WE were told by trooper union personnel that we'd be sued if we talked about those threats. Amazing. . . .
"So consistency is needed here," the e-mail said. "No one's above the law. If the law needs to be changed to not allow access to guns for people threatening to kill someone, it must apply to everyone."

Didnt see much wrong there. I thought she made some good points.

Nothing to see here folks, move along.

Would be nice if these kinds of reports would publish the entire source without any editing. Can never get a clear understanding of what actually happened based on current headlines or quotes.

This is a joke right ??? Is this the best the Kossaks and the Obamabots can come up with??? They're digging a little deep to make a story out of this one...

This trooper threatens to kill her father, and she's somehow at fault, for what exactly ???

The Rezko & Ayres connections to Barack Hussein Obama somehow aren't news-worthy, but this "troopergate" bullshit gets front-page billing with several major news sources / sites ???

                        Re: Troopergate

I'm a little surprised at the way the McCain-Palin campaign is handling this situation, specifically the confrontational tact they've taken:

Forget about whether she's actually done anything wrong for a moment and focus on the strategy. Assume for a moment that she's confident she's done nothing wrong and will be vindicated. Let things play out, cooperate, and enjoy your bump when it happens.

Now assume that she's actually in some trouble. The GOP has shown a frankly amazing ability to discount such things, and even if the investigation shows that she's done something wrong, they can probably claim that it's a partisan witch hunt, and by the time the right wing echo chamber is done with it, she's got a day or so of bad press, but probably no serious lasting effects...

...Or at least nothing worse than the now daily stories that come out about her and her staff not complying with subpoenas, not cooperating with authorities, etc. The perception is sometimes more important than the reality in politics, and right now, the perception is that she's playing games, and that's going to continue to be the perception until the investigation is over.

So, if indeed there is something to this investigation, it becomes a question of whether you prefer 1 day of horrible news, or three weeks of generally unflattering press culminating with horrible news -- and if it really is a witch hunt, then you're just left with three weeks of generally unflattering press, the net result of which might not be eclipsed by her vindication.

                        Just some thoughts...

                            Toasty,

It turns out that the firing of Commissioner Walter Monegan had nothing to do with the rogue trooper. As Monegan wrote MANY emails detailing his persistent insubordination and attempts to circumvent multiple directives coming from Palin's office (on a number of unrelated issues). Officials viewing the emails indicated that Monegan most certainly should have been fired, cause he was pretty much just being a dick...

                            http://www.time.com/time/politics/ar...841770,00.html

Even the Democrat in charge of the investigation claims that the whole this is becoming extremely "partisan" in nature... So go ahead, wait till after McCain & Palin get elected, then investigate away...

                            What's the hurry ???

That's not really the point. The point is, if she's done nothing wrong OR EVEN IF SHE HAS, allowing the story for the next few weeks to be "Palin Stonewalls Trooper Investigation" is a stupid move politically. The downside from that kind of coverage is probably worse than the eventual outcome of any investigation, even if it finds she did something wrong. Being on the defense for a number of weeks is worse than a couple of days of damage control, IMO. The sheen on Palin is already starting to fade, and this isn't likely to help.
