The theories I've heard saying that mini black holes will destroy the planet stem from the idea that yes, there are cosmic rays constantly creating them everywhere, but the speed of the cosmic rays (and therefore the black holes) is too fast to be caught by gravitational fields. These theorist's fears with the LHC is that the black holes will only be traveling ~9 km/s which is slow enough to get caught in the earth's gravitational field. Unable to escape the earth's pull, the black hole would take approximately 50 months (by their calculations) to consume the matter of the entire planet.
EDIT: Holy shit I just realized that if you believe in the Mayan calendar, exactly 50 months from Oct. 21, 2008 is December 21, 2012, the day their calendar ends. Coincidence???
