    The Death of OPEC

Saudi Arabia walked out on OPEC yesterday, saying it would not honor the cartel's production cut. It was tired of rants from Hugo Chavez of Venezuela and the well-dressed oil minister from Iran.

As the world's largest crude exporter, the kingdom in the desert took its ball and went home.

As the Saudis left the building, the message was shockingly clear. “Saudi Arabia will meet the market’s demand,” a senior OPEC delegate told the New York Times. “We will see what the market requires and we will not leave a customer without oil."

OPEC will still have lavish meetings and a nifty headquarters in Vienna, Austria, but the Saudis have made certain the the organization has lost its teeth. Even though the cartel argued that the sudden drop in crude was due to "oversupply", OPEC's most powerful member knows that the drop may only be temporary. Cold weather later this year could put pressure on prices. So could a decision by Russia that it wants to "punish" the U.S. and European Union for a time. That political battle is only at its beginning.

The downward pressure on oil got a second hand. Brazil has confirmed another huge oil deposit to add to one it discovered off-shore earlier this year. The first field uncovered by Petrobras has the promise of being one of the largest in the world. The breadth of that deposit has now expanded.

OPEC needs the Saudis to have any credibility in terms of pricing, supply, and the ongoing success of its bully pulpit. By failing to keep its most critical member, it forfeits its leverage.

OPEC has made no announcement about any possibility of dissolving, but the process is already over.

Quite the opposite. I may be biased because my parents are working for Saudi Aramco over there, but the Saudis not putting up with OPEC's political bullshit and wanting to keep some remote semblance of stability in the market is admirable. It only makes sense for them because oil is quite literally their only source of income, so they want to sell as much as they can. Luckily that helps us, too.

You can't have manslaughter without laughter.

"Son," he said without preamble, "never trust a man who doesn't drink because he's probably a self-righteous sort, a man who thinks he knows right from wrong all the time. Some of them are good men, but in the name of goodness, they cause most of the suffering in the world. They're the judges, the meddlers. And, son, never trust a man who drinks but refuses to get drunk. They're usually afraid of something deep down inside, either that they're a coward or a fool or mean and violent. You can't trust a man who's afraid of himself. But sometimes, son, you can trust a man who occasionally kneels before a toilet. The chances are that he is learning something about humility and his natural human foolishness, about how to survive himself. It's damned hard for a man to take himself too seriously when he's heaving his guts into a dirty toilet bowl."

This is point of view, another point of view is that they are the biggest oil producer and they are in bed with US (government wise) and they are defo doing this to help the economic situation in USA and the west in general.
I am not really buying the fact that they want to sell more for less when they can sell the same for More, this got more to do with politics that it’s with economics in my opinion.

the saudi's want to keep the price of oil stable because they don't want the world switching to alternative energy sources. they're not stupid. they did not like it when oil was at $147 a barrel, because it caused alot of public outrage. they want to maintain their income stream as long as possible, and who can blame them. pretty tough to sell sand...

and i say this as someone who works for one of the biggest oil companies in the world.

                    Re: The Death of OPEC

I agree with you that no one was happy with the $147 barrel, it was pure speculation driven prices, but as some one works for oil company you defo know how much money & time needed to shift to economical alternative source of energy esp for the manufacturing sector!

The issue is how’s the biggest oil producer walk out on the oil cartel, not very logical move taking in consideration that they already control OPIC and the market.
