Giving McCain the benefit of the doubt, it's possible he misheard or misunderstood the question and he certainly sounded a bit confused when answering whether or not he would be willing to meet with Jose Luis Zapatero, Spain's Prime Minister. His rambling about Latin America would suggest that he didn't understand what was being asked of him when he declined to agree to such a meeting.

It's tougher to give him a pass, however, when his foreign policy advisor confirms that that is exactly what McCain meant to do:
OK, in light of this confirmation of his comment, I'm obliged to wonder if foreign policy deity McCain is aware that Spain is actually in Europe, and that we don't refer to "Latin America" as "Spain" on account of them speaking Spanish there. More troubling, though, I'm further obliged to wonder why the hell he wouldn't just say, "Of course." I mean, it's SPAIN ffs -- a fellow member of NATO and an ally -- what is the downside of meeting with Zapatero?
