    Prequel to Florida Voter Challenges

At times I wonder how the GOP does this shit with a straight face:

TALLAHASSEE — A new pitch for John McCain's presidential campaign aimed at older Democratic voters is causing complaints by Democrats and concern by elections officials.

The piece, paid for by the Republican National Committee and authorized by McCain, tells voters it is seeking to double-check their "unconfirmed" party affiliations while asking for money. A letter signed by McCain tells the Democrats: "We have you registered as a Republican."

    ...

"This is simply a fundraising piece," said spokeswoman Amber Wilkerson, adding in an e-mail it was not "worth writing about."

Two top Florida elections officials, both Republicans, faulted the GOP mailing, calling it "confusing" and "unfortunate" because of a potential to undermine voter confidence by making them question the accuracy of their registrations.

    ...

Some Democrats suspect a motive beyond raising money. The first-class GOP mailing has a "Do not forward" instruction on the envelope, meaning they will be returned to the GOP if a recipient has had mail forwarded, perhaps to a summer address, or has moved.

Letters returned as undeliverable can be compiled into "challenge lists" of unverifiable addresses and can be used to challenge voters' eligibility during early voting or on Election Day. The vote suppression technique is known as "vote caging."

I'd be interested to know if people actually registered as Republicans got this mailer as well. Seriously, seriously doubt it. What's all the more fishy is that it makes no difference what your party affiliation is for the general election, making the purported purpose of the mailer a non sequitur.

For you freedom-loving people out there who intend to vote for McCain, how do you reconcile the fact that your party's campaign strategy literally includes challenging voters' ability to vote? And before you reply that the Democrats do it, too, I'm here to tell you as a member of the voter protection team for Kerry and Obama's campaigns, our marching orders are exactly the opposite -- we're instructed to make sure that come hell or high water, no one leaves the polling center without at least voting a provisional ballot, so that the vote can be counted after their eligibility is confirmed. My credentials refer to me as a "Challenger," but we are expressly prohibited by the campaign from challenging any voter, for any reason.

What a farce of a democracy this is...

There goes the RNC again, using their voodoo & mind control techniques on elderly Florida voters...
"I was a little bit shocked and a little bit surprised," said recipient Bill Smith, 81, of Tampa who calls himself a lifelong Democrat."

Honestly, you'd really have to live in Florida to realize how paranoid and confused the Democratic voters are in this state... If it rains on election day, they're going to accuse GW of using his magical weather machine to help McCain get elected...

Really, it's ok though... Most of these old geezers vote "absentee" in New York, before flocking south for the annual snow-bird migration... So it'll all balance out, like it does every election cycle...

While we're on the topic of voter challenges and other shenanigans, whose keeping an eye on ACORN this time around ???? hmmmm ???

    Toasty,
Please tell me you don't work for ACORN ??? Or worse, the ACLU ???
Q: What do Osama and Obama have in common???
A: They both have a friend that blew up the Pentagon!

Nope, the voter protection work has been through the campaigns themselves.

            Toasty,
I'm curious to know what your thoughts are on the "no match, no vote" law that is being enforced this election year in Florida ??? Is this something you're familiar with? Are there other states enforcing similar policies around the country?

I got my absentee ballot form in the mail last week, I'm guessing(?) those registering (with either party) over the last 6 months get similar mailings in this area...

Reading about voting issues here, I am so glad our system here is so simple, and works so well!!

I hadn't heard of this practice specifically, but I can tell you that my thoughts generally are that there ought to be a common sense approach to verifying that people are who they say they are -- photo ID, voter ref card, match a signature, repeat a secret word, something -- but that making people jump though additional hoops after they've verified their identity in a reasonably reliable way is both unnecessary and likely to result in more problems than it solves.

Before I moved, I always had an issue when I would vote because somewhere along the way, my name got matched up with the wrong signature on the voting rolls. I would have this identical discussion every election:

                Them: Your signature doesn't match.
Me: I know. That's guy didn't even try to sign my name. That's Neil Something-or-Other.
Them: Oh yeah, I see, must be a mistake. Carry on.

Minor hassle, but hey, I got to vote, because common sense prevails. Seems like a reasonable approach -- if you can verify who you are somehow, you get to vote.

Extra hoops like this "match" thing decrease the number of votes cast, both through challenges and causing delay, which creates longer lines at the polls and turns people away. Florida ought to get ready for another day full of headaches, if they actually intend to try to enforce that.
