    FAO Denver Residents

Seems like there's a lot of peeps from Denver on here so I figured this is a good a place as any to ask.

Looking to move to Denver in the next 4 to 6 months and am curious as to what's a good area to move to. I want to be in the city and near the action per se, so what are some street names/apartment buildings/ and so on that I should be looking for?

    Cheers and thanks!

you'll be happy i think. best place in the world imo.

here's a map you can use to search with, anything in red is where i would live give or take. you can cross reference craigslist hits (which is what I would use for searching btw) capital hill & the wash park areas are the best imo. cap hill has tons of "older" apartment complexes & studios ranging from 600/month to $$$$, with lots of local restaurants & bars and is within walking distance to anywhere downtown or a $7 cab ride. wash park is the "central park" of denver. little more expensive, not many apts. though, more houses...

It all depends on your budget... Capitol hill area is the most affordable. Browse craigslist, you should be able to find a good deal there

It is a great place to live, you should love it!

Also, I am looking for LARGE and OPEN spaces, think huge open lofts/warehouse living if that helps.

not familiar with that building per se, but looks good to me. that area is cool. now that's getting a little more in the industrial(ish) part of town as you get more east from there. denver's "downtown" is very businessy and is a ghost town on the weekends. this building is closer to that part and farther away from the neighborhoods with a little more character. but if you want a big loft, you're definitely right there. pros: real close to downtown and baseball. pretty close to I-25/70 which is the road to out of town north/south or mts & airport.

If you want to be in the thick of things, but still affordable, Capitol Hill is a good area, its within walking distance of most Denver hotspots. Lots of clubs, bars and nightlife are located in the LoDo area.

What's nice about downtown, is most stuff is within walking distance. Near the Auraria campus is a great central location. Living near a light rail station is also very helpful as well.

Just a few questions about the city itself. What's the night life like? I've heard it's good, but is it EDM good or just Top40/Hip-Hop good? What's bar time? Are clubs able to stay open past bar time? Is there a good hot spot for shopping?

I've done some research and I would just like to hear it from some of the locals

                        Re: FAO Denver Residents

What's the night life like? for the most part I'd say it's bars & restaurants type city. downtown has a few areas with a saturation of mainstream bars that get rammed most every friday or saturday. the music is decent for all areas, but just like EDM you have to find it and meet the right people. ive heard the indie scene is good, not into it. lots of jams bands, fuck that. fillmore auditorium gets all the rest of the music. its a pretty decent sports town and all the stadiums are relatively close to each other. the "downtown" area is very compact. so once you're out of that, there's not much else short of neighborhoods that have local bars & restaurants. once your out of the downtown radius of about a mile or 2 its all suburbia hell for fucking miles. denver is one of the biggest urban sprawl cities ive ever been too. the city grew out, not up.

there's not many lounges that play decent house or deep house anymore. we have 3 superclubs - beta, church & vinyl. handful of other edm venues. lots of little parties and surprisingly big raves with kiddie ravers.

Top40/Hip-Hop good? yes but they're ghetto. lots of wannabe thugs. good luck.

What's bar time? 2am we have one good afterhours club that stays open until 5am i believe, its called 2am (no joke)

Are clubs able to stay open past bar time? no. sucks

Is there a good hot spot for shopping? yes. cherry creek north has lots of high end, one off boutiques. cherry creek mall has all the regular stuff. downtown and certain other areas (broadway) have awesome retro, one-offs, vintage and thrift stores.

basically denver is a big cow town that tries but in the end is still land-locked by 1700 miles in either direction. its roots are in oil & gas and there's alot of old-western money here, which keep things pretty conservative. if you're moving here for the nightlife, you're gonna be sad but not majorly disappointed or suicidal. we have lots of small local crews with amazing djs, there just might only be 30 people at the party. denver is cheap. all the other music scenes i can't comment on. theres a small art community. it tries.

now if your outdoorsy, this place is fucking heaven. where else on earth can you ski powder in the morning at arguably the worlds best resorts, come down and play 9 at retarded golf courses. get cleaned up and see digweed that evening for $10. thats why im here. im renting a condo this ski season in the mts and plan on banging out 40 days on the mountain and i work full time. everyone is in shape and mildly good looking. colorado is always 1-2 for the fittest state. you cant help but go do something or else you feel like a piece of shit. everyone skis, rides, runs, bikes, climbs, lots of clubs for tris-sports... go to wash park at 5pm on a tuesday and you'll see what i mean no offense to anyone but when we go to the midwest of out east were always shocked how fat people are. you dont see the general obesity here in colorado. its nice and keeps you on your toes.

exhibit a: we're going to aspen this weekend for a 3day vacation and for the leaves, should look about like this.

denver is a mecca for really awesome young people that dont know what they want to do in life, but know that they want to work hard and play hard. they move here cause its easy and end up not ever leaving. the weather is fucking amazing, average temperature of 50 degrees YEAR ROUND. zero humidity. one great myth is that its frigid here. its not. the dry humidity also keeps it from feeling really cold in the winter too. i only have to wear a heavy winter coat a few weeks out of the winter. if it rains or snows it usually sunny within a few hours to the next day.

                        my .02 for now...

I'm a huge hockey guy myself so Denver sounds like a good place to be (although I am a Pens a fan = p). Everything you said more or less is what I got the impression of while talking to other people and doing some minor online research.

One of the big reasons I'm moving out there is the cost of living (cheaper than where I am now). But I like how everyone is fit so that should be nice as well ^_~

Appreciate all the help guys and if anyone has anything else to say then please do!

                            Re: FAO Denver Residents

I have to agree with Nsite.. that is a pretty comprehensive summary. The EDM scene isn't as great as bigger cities, but if you talk to the right people, you'll be able to find some pretty decent music.

One of the founders of beatport.com runs Club Beta and he gets all the big talent to come. We can sort of compete with the bigger cities on that, but thats about it unless you want to go parties (raves). Some promoters get some decent DJs, but the parties can be really hit or miss (especially with all of the little raver kids)

The hockey scene here is still pretty big, though it has dropped off in the last couple of years. Ever since the strike, hockey in general hasn't been what it used to be. If the AVS keep improving, the magic will return.

You'll find NFL to be the main sport here. People bleed blue & orange. The Broncos are like a religion. I am personally a soccer guy and follow the Rapids (I've got season tickets) & the entire sport in general more than I follow any other sport.

I was born and raised and Packer fan too, but I'm a fan of the whole NFL in general. Denver is shaping up to be a good change of pace me thinks.
