A music question I've always wondered about

As you will all know, if you don't visit the P&R forum for just one day, it has about 2 new pages of fresh sets.

Where and how do people get all these sets from? Are they the actual original recordings straight from the club, or are they just taken from another forum and pasted here?

And how do they get the original set? What device 'records' the set, as I'm sure it isn't a DAT anymore - is it put straight into a PC? How the hell can a DJ be 100% sure his set isn't being recorded?

He's probably a CIA bugging specialist like Gene Hackman in The Conversation !

Some stuff seems to be radio sets .. others may be from warm up DJ's or Club workers etc.

It's a bloody good question .. .Diggers is probably still fuming about Beruit Forum !

This release was mastered direct from vinyl at the request of the DJ and as such features natural sound characteristics of this medium such as record surface noise.

I always wondered the same thing.I thought that with all the members we have, some one somewhere has always got their finger on the record button. With all the internet radio stations that are out there. These sets are bound to be recorded.

Re: A music question I've always wondered about

This thread ended up with lots of good info. It's so easy yo do good recordings straight from the mixer.

I am trying to find a way to record my gigs on a device. I purchased a laptop but I find it too bulky to carry it with me (+ cd case, it's too much). I looked around and found those small mp4 players with line in, but they record on mp3 64kbps basis, and they are made in china etc etc... I am looking for something small that

I'm sure anywhere from 40-50% of the sets are digital radio or streams? And I doubt if most of the posters in P&R recorded the live sets themselves. Back in the day, these mp3s were the purview of the mp3 ripping/release scene which was pretty competitive and the groups try to outdo each other by getting something out ASAP. But these days with so many forums and communities for each genre niche or otherwise, I'm sure a lot of fans simply record the sets and share them with each other ASAP. The EDM scene is nothing compared to the band scene when it comes to recording and sharing stuff.

there should be very few sets that were recorded illegelly in the club and leaked without any permission! i think for most of the sets in the p&r are either promos and the dj wants to share or radio broadcasts, either weekly/monthly shows or live broadcasts. also dont forget that every dj has a page on the internet or at least facebook, where he has left some lives for his fans to enjoy!

Yeah it's a good sign that DJs are beginning to get into the whole interweb thing as a promotional vehicle. If you looked back 2-3 yrs ago, you never saw people like Pappa or Lieb or Warren doing any online radio shows or monthlies. Wisternoff was the stalwart of those monthlies.

it was recorded without him knowing, then it was hosted here and someone told him we had it. he made ms take it down and threatened to open legal proceedings against that Fez guy. but then everyone emailed him and was like "no, fez luvz u he's just a poor soul who's intentions are good, please don't let him be misunderstood". so he played it on the radio show anyway.

^ Yes, I was not surprised of what happened with him when he came to Beirut:
The lacal radio stations, that ususally organize concerts, are not always all that ethical when it comes to edm (illegally ripping concerts or other): they go to great length to unleash war between themselves and "poison" the local edm industry in all way possible in order to reach their goals (financial-driven). They even go as low as to hit on successful djs that might be working with a competitor radio-station.
There are no laws whatsoever protecting copyrights or intellectual proprieties here; you may even find hackers that setup illegal businesses to sell tracks, and the rabbit hole goes very deep...unfortunately.
