many of the former communist countries saw new regimes rise up who tried to portray themselves as democratic, but in essence they are still marxist or communist. they switch from a totalitarian to an authoritarian system, and they use a different system of propaganda try to still keep people adhering to their cause.
elections, freedom of speech, religion, expression, press are all a sham and a farce. the economy is portrayed as capitalist, when it is actually still controlled by those who had power during the communist regime.
in short, its a wolf in sheep clothing. in romania for example, they portrayed the overthrow of communism as a revolution when in reality it wasnt at all spontaneous. as soon as the new leaders took power they were repressing all those against them and those crying for true democracy. those who supported them did so because of the same old communist propaganda and did that in a fashion similar to communist times.

moved here about 11 years ago. and while communism was overturned when i was about 10 1/2 years old, for some reason i understood it all very well. i still think its funny that instead of playing with the very few toys we had, my best friends or my brother and I would talk about communism and how we could try to overthrow it or what we could do when we would become older. instead of playing, i would hang out with my parents and grandparents and listen to radio free europe or voice of america, where romanian dissidents in diaspora would talk about and discuss the romanian communist regime. ftw
