    Re: world markets today

    a mega shitstorm this is.

i think it's going to get much, much worse before it gets any better. there is a lot of suffering in stock for us forsures, but do not obsolete, and outmoded systems get obliterated, so that more powerful systems can manifest? that's how it always is. imagine a more proportionate capitalism, that gets my hopes up at least.

honestly, are the great minds of the world progressing into such a stagnant state of retardation? damn, we just entered a new millennium, and have come so far since the preceding world wars. tryin to stay optimistic thru it all.

Indeed it will. Get used to the markets doing this for a while, and for real economic hardship to follow soon. I don't know that we'll get a better permanent system out of this - the way I see this working is a cycle. It's a cycle driven by human nature. People invest conservatively for a while, and markets remain generally aligned with economic fundamentals. Then some people get greedy and adopt a riskier investment profile, leverage themselves...and all too often lie themselved into thinking it's not that risky. This is around the time when the disparity between the rich and the poor grows exponentially. And then the cycle starts over. You can see this cycle reflected in the vascillation of things like too much and too little market regulation, disparity between the rich and the poor, etc.

One thing you can bet on for sure is that this cycle will not fundamentally change over time. It will keep happening. Why? Because human nature does not fundamentally change over time.

those of you that have 401k's i was thinking of moving my money all into one of the more stable low risk funds (US stable bank fund or Pimco) so i dont lose anymore....Is this a smart thing to do

I'm no financial expert, so take this for what it's worth, but I'm not touching any of my long-term investments -- 401K, variable term life insurance, etc. They are long term enough that you can expect to see ebbs and flows in the market over their lifetime. It sucks to watch their value plummet, but unless you are much older than the rest of us, you're not going to be touching it for a long time anyway, and it will have ample time to recover -- plus the money you're putting into it now is buying stocks at real bargains. If you take your money out now, though, you realize your loss immediately, in addition to the penalties, taxes, etc.

I'm trying to remind myself that you put money in these sorts of investments because in the long term, they perform well, even if there are ebbs and flows in the short term. Trying to time the market is something you do with short-term investments, not 401Ks.

At least that's what I'm telling myself. I'm trying hard to not check the balance, because it just bums me out. They've got to rebound eventually, right?

miro, i expect a better opinion out of you, considering your firm. if americana kept the balance sheets happy, today would be an anarchist's pipedream. media caused the mass deportation of money from the market, like the old days where birth control was considered pullin out.
