we didnt fuck up the world. poor people begged for credit, clinton obliged. be careful what you ask for, especially considering the two monkeys that have to be elected. hte media is mostly to blame for turning a lit match into a wildfire. and if they listened to congress in 93 and 96 this never would have happened. but dont worry, all the left wing asshats that are screaming about it, well, like i said, be careful what ya ask for.

and to that asinine comment by simonr, joe on the street is about to get fucked like a puppy being fucked by a bull. its gonna hurt them even more.

You have to admit, the bankers didn't help. The complete cycle looks more like:

poor people begged for credit, clinton obliged...and so did the bankers, the realtors, and the home builders because they were all greedy and arrogant, and wanted to upgrade to a bigger yacht.

"Son," he said without preamble, "never trust a man who doesn't drink because he's probably a self-righteous sort, a man who thinks he knows right from wrong all the time. Some of them are good men, but in the name of goodness, they cause most of the suffering in the world. They're the judges, the meddlers. And, son, never trust a man who drinks but refuses to get drunk. They're usually afraid of something deep down inside, either that they're a coward or a fool or mean and violent. You can't trust a man who's afraid of himself. But sometimes, son, you can trust a man who occasionally kneels before a toilet. The chances are that he is learning something about humility and his natural human foolishness, about how to survive himself. It's damned hard for a man to take himself too seriously when he's heaving his guts into a dirty toilet bowl."

romanian stock exchange closed the market at 11 am because it went down rapidly with 15 procent and they stopped all transaction.my brother in law is a broker and i asked him why is that our stock exchange is dropping so fast.he said it's because all the investors foreign or local from romania sell here, take there money out and start buying stocks outside wich dropped from 300 to 30 instead of buying here stocks that went from 50 to 30.it's a bit more complicated than what the media sells, that stroy about the 5 plus morgage banks sold there and that's how it got to this free fall.i dont reallly believe that crap

You know, I hear a lot of people saying some variation of this these days. And it strikes me as fundamentally anti-capitalist in nature.

It's a free market, arguably semi-strong form efficient in most cases over long periods of time. This is what markets do - they react quickly to all publicly available information. Yes, markets are not always efficient in every situation and people may overreact. But this will just create an arbitrage opportunity over time for smarter market participants who are better aligned with fundamental asset values. And yes, media sources are not always reliable, but the ones who get too far out of line will be disciplined by the natural mechanism of market competition - people will just go to their competitors. Sophisticated money doesn't do their trades based just upon CNN headlines.

Markets are obviously not perfect, but I'd argue that over the long run they are still the best mechanism we have for determining asset values. I'd also argue that, broadly speaking, the current market downturn is not misaligned with economic fundamentals - I'd bet it's better aligned with it than it has been in the past. Credit was ridiculously overextended, asset values were hopelessly overinflated, and it's time for them to come back down to reality. This is the market working. And if it goes a bit too far, then it will bounce back soon enough. Meddling in the market, filtering information into it, trying to prop up and manipulate values - that's exactly what produces things like this housing bubble.

(....now I'm waiting for one of you astute folks to pounce on how I can argue this point and yet also support the bailout )
