Re: Acorn
shouldn't bother to respond to this substantively, but here goes:
First off, ACORN is not funded by taxpayer dollars as far as I'm aware. If you've got something that demonstrates that they do, I'm open to being proven wrong on this, but they are not a governmental organization and don't get taxpayer dollars as far as I'm aware.
Second, McCain and really the GOP as a whole had no problem with ACORN up until, oh I'd say a few days ago:
Third, this is obviously sketchy and clearly something odd is afoot, but what exactly do fake registrations get you? Is ACORN planning on having the entire Dallas Cowboys team show up and cast a vote somewhere? Is a poll judge supposed to look the other way when "Asdf Qwerty" shows up and tries to vote? Or an entire Jimmy Johns sandwich shop? Also, even if Dan Smith registers two dozen times, he still only gets to cast one vote, right?
Honestly, the lack of any upside from a voting standpoint makes me wonder if this isn't a situation where maybe there is some sort of internal ACORN incentive or contest to see who could get the most registrations, and workers have cheated on that by filling out dummy registration cards. Still stupid, but it might offer a better explanation than trying to sneak Mickey Mouse past the election judge.
The other thing to keep in mind is that organizations like ACORN are duty bound to turn in any registration cards they get. As I understand it, although ACORN turned in these obviously fraudulent cards, in some circumstances, they are also the people that flagged them as likely fraudulent. Didn't see that in the story...
