    Will He or Won't He?

Curious what people think on this -- McCain's poll numbers have been sliding for days, and tonight's debate probably marks his last opportunity to do something dramatic and game-changing before a live, national audience. He's in a bit of a pickle, though, from a strategy standpoint.

On the one hand, he needs to do something significant and newsworthy to change the dialogue, and those on the far right are pleading with him to attack Obama at the debate over Ayers, Wright, Rezko, etc. Moreover, he's basically already said he intends to bring up Ayers. A debate like the last two probably ensures an Obama presidency.

On the other hand, since Ayers has become a line of attack for the McCain campaign, his poll numbers have steadily dropped, and what's more, Obama's favorabilty ratings have increased with his unfavorability ratings staying largely flat, while McCain's favorabilty numbers have stayed flat with his unfavorability ratings rising. In other words, not only is it not working, it's actually hurting.

He's faced with a cruel choice: play it nice and piss off the base who is foaming at the mouth for hard-hitting attacks (and risk looking like a puss, since he already said he intended to attack), or go on the attack and piss off the independents and moderates.

I bet he goes with option 1, actually. "McCain Offers Negative Attack" is hardly news right now, and he's got to know that Obama will have a ready response -- Obama all but dared McCain to bring it up.

i don't think he knows HOW to be nice in an over the top kinda way.

i think some weak sauce middle ground is where he'll end up.

I think if nothing else the whole mccain/palin camp has proved over the past few weeks that when they are backed into a corner they come out spiteful and juvenile

is this really a question? McCain has already said he will do this.

OK, but he's a politician, so that means very little. Can't imagine that he'd do it if his handlers decide it's a bad idea. These guys play to win, not stand by their word.

Obama will be very well prepared for such an attack - and will have multiple lines of come back to parade out if McCain does throw down.
Sitting opposite each other is going to make it hard for McCain to be as obnoxious as he wants to be.
I'm sure it will be raised - but it will just be a non-event.

You can't have manslaughter without laughter.

"Son," he said without preamble, "never trust a man who doesn't drink because he's probably a self-righteous sort, a man who thinks he knows right from wrong all the time. Some of them are good men, but in the name of goodness, they cause most of the suffering in the world. They're the judges, the meddlers. And, son, never trust a man who drinks but refuses to get drunk. They're usually afraid of something deep down inside, either that they're a coward or a fool or mean and violent. You can't trust a man who's afraid of himself. But sometimes, son, you can trust a man who occasionally kneels before a toilet. The chances are that he is learning something about humility and his natural human foolishness, about how to survive himself. It's damned hard for a man to take himself too seriously when he's heaving his guts into a dirty toilet bowl."
