    Someone help me understand...

McCain's health plan. Specifically the possibility of me being taxed on my health benefits. I did a quick check and it looks like my employer is currently paying almost 7k/yr for my health plan (keep in mind that I'm single w/ no kids and this number would be higher for married w/ kids, etc.). So currently, we don't get taxed on that amount:

"The 71 percent of insured Americans who get their health coverage through their employers now enjoy a significant advantage because the money spent by employers on their health coverage is excluded from their taxable income. If employers chose to pay that share of a worker’s compensation as wages rather than benefits, the income would be taxable."

Now if that were to change, as purposed by McCain, it would essentially wipe out half of my claimable deductions, with the end result being more taxes paid by me (than it currently stands). McCain has been preaching no increase in taxes but if I've got this figured properly this would significantly increase my taxes (not directly, as a result of higher tax rates but because what was previously exempt would be no longer). Am I calculating this properly or do I have this all wrong?

Sightless? I figured you'd be all over this since its your area of expertise.

Shosh? Help me understand why this is better than what Obama is purposing.

i believe you are correct somewhere along those lines but you would also get a tax credit for it.

i did go and read from mccains website to see how it would all work... http://www.johnmccain.com/content/de...3-9A1FAD62C3DA

        also

Obama: If implemented immediately and in total, there would be a reduction in the
uninsured by 25.5 million covered lives (from 47 million) at an annual cost
        exceeding $452 billion dollars.

McCain: If these proposals were implemented immediately and in total, there would be a
reduction in the uninsured by 27.5 million covered lives (from 47 million) at an
        annual cost of $287 billion.

I think you're deluding yourself if you think this is an "independent" third party study. I can't help but notice that the studies you're citing were commissioned by "McCain Campaign 2008."

The "Summary Snapshot" of the two plans is pretty telling -- Obama's plan:

Barack Obama’s proposal includes an array of policy components acting in combination. If implemented immediately and in total, there would be a reduction in the
uninsured by 25.5 million covered lives (from 47 million) at an annual cost
exceeding $452 billion dollars. The Obama proposal has a range of initiatives intended
to increase health insurance coverage and make it more affordable. In general, the
proposal is a potpourri of prior initiatives that lacks an integrated design. It is primarily a
list of ‘fixes’ with little discussion of contradictions among specific plan elements (e.g.,
states’ rights for health reform vs. mandatory child coverage) and raises questions
regarding the operational components of the plan if passed as legislation
                      .
On the other hand, HSI begins its report with glowing praise about its client's plan:

John McCain proposes boldly to fix the United States’ broken health insurance system.
                      Boldly, eh? Golly.

On the substance of the two plans, I honestly don't know enough about them to offer anything more than talking points, so I'll stfu now. It's at least refreshing to see a Republican talking about healthcare reform. Most of the time, you ask a republican politician about health care, and he gets this look on his face like, "why the fuck would I care about health care?"
