Giving serious thought to moving to NYC

Hey all my MS friends in New York and the NYC area. Been thinking of moving to NYC...Brooklyn, Queens for a long time as some of you know. Well I've got a little over 14 grand in my bank account and was wondering if you guys and gals thought it would be enough to get there, find a nice apartment that I could paint and work on my music and sleep in for a couple months of not having to get a job just yet. Live on the funds and get a job. Probably working for the cable company as I have a bunch of experience in working in that field.

I'd really like to come a few times to look around and find something I like. Probably in Brooklyn or Queens, as I know it's really expensive finding an apartment in Manhattan. A friend of mine here said he and his music partner in DD Pesh were living there in a 1500 SQ FT loft and paying the same amount for it in Brooklyn. No naturally I'd like to find something like that...but I basically want an apartment where I don't have to hear my neighbors.

Does anyone know much about these apartment sites for NYC and surrounding areas? I've looked on a few of them and found (what look to be) some nice looking places for around 1000 to 1300/Mo.

Anyone got any good ideas. As I've got a bunch of Artists who keep telling me I need to get to NYC so they can help me with my painting and getting into Galleries.

If you want your own place it will be a bit more than 1300 a month unless you live pretty damn far from the subway or in a semi sketchy hood. The job market here is horrible, so I would find out if the company you want to eventually work for is hiring now first.

I would wait until spring cuz NYC winters can be pretty soul sucking and dismal.

long island would be cheaper if you dont mind a half hour commute. paces like mineola, garden city,etc, they are just over the queens border, are like a 1/2 hour train ride to manhatten(penn station). depends on price and your wallet. NYC gets expensive, and if you ahve car, long island works. beaches, two shores, city within a half hour. granted i live out further east (LI, gold coast, huntington harbour(11743), and i have all the fishing villages thatr have a ton of bars, but the towns in west nassau are great. long beach rules. mineola does the job. even eastern queens.

dude, i'd wait at this point. I'm honestly not sure how the economy will turn out, and you might otherwise prefer to have a sizeable amount stored away just in case.

and i say this as a person who wants to meet you in person and knows it will cost $1 on the megabus to get from phila to nyc.

i guess what i'm trying to say is, right now is probably a time to be conservative on spending and savings.

^^^I agree, but being someone who has always wanted to be in NY. I feel like i've finally got the go ahead to do it. I have been thinking about Queens or Brooklyn, because if you know the art world...they don't like to travel much to see your work.

astoria is a great town.
would stay away from jamaica.

thanks bro. What do you guys think of the Italian parts of Harlem? I saw a nice apartment online that said it was in a heavily Italian area of Harlem.

if you're looking in brooklyn, go for williamsburg or greenpoint

if queens, astoria is the way to go..a 5 minute subway ride from the city...forest hills is good too..about 20 minutes on the subway & much much cheaper

getting a roommate is key...www.craigslist.com is your friend
