Re: Giving serious thought to moving to NYC

Yeah I was thinking of Williamsburg. It seems to be the place where artists are moving to these days.

One thing I do NOT wanna do is get a roomate. I'm wanting to live by myself and be able to have all the room for what I need in an apartment.

    Thanks for the advice.

what about just living in a van down by the river?

I could do that but I don't have a van.

Room mates suck. Every person that has ever lived with me gives that same line, "Oh, I'm a very clean person." Fucking liars. Everyone is a slob. The only person that isn't a slob is yourself, because only you can put up with your own messiness.

my car worked just fine down by the creek.

ya go lone wolf solo bro, my best friends sister lived in a modestly cheap lil studio in hells kitchen, i think off 19th? 23rd? i cant remember the full details. but we stayed there for a week, and it was fun. very convenient and good access to all things manhattan.

Yeah Hells Kitchen is a pretty trendy part of town from what a friend tells me. They've got a really nice restaurant right off 9th ave I think. Since my friend lives off 8th Ave right down the street from Times Square and we went to breakfast in this place the day I arrived. Really nice place...I think it was called Hells Kitchen...or something like that.

Yeah I don't think i'd want a roomate, unless it was a couple women, so we could get a three's company thing going on. LOL.

Re: Giving serious thought to moving to NYC

List the pros and cons of moving or staying where you are. Or make a list of the pros and cons of each area. The second option might be difficult because you havent lived in NYC before so you don't truly know the pros and cons...What's the biggest city you have lived in before (population)?

Decide on if the pros outweigh the cons and are inline with your goals and then move. My advice would be to find a place to live where they are willing to let you pay on a month to month basis. Instead of wasting time once you've gotten there go looking for a place to move into involving a lease (or lease to own if thats what your thinking).

Could be amazing, could be a huge dissapointment, that all depends on you and what your looking to accomplish.

It was fun while it lasted...

nice move jeff, great energy in the city for an artist, consider Soho also, if all goes as planned I'll be a part time resident there in the very near future, not sure if the rental prices in the area meet your criteria, but a very artsy, hip community

Re: Giving serious thought to moving to NYC

Soho is nice, but from what I've seen and heard they have some pretty high rental properties there. As it's where the artists USED to live until the neighborhood gentrification.

I've actually done a bit of the pros and cons. And the cons basically state that if I stay here, I might as well quit painting because no one ever really gets known outside of Ohio by living in Ohio. Columbus is supposed to be the 15th largest city in the country, but they sure do have a small arts scene. And one of the smallest museums in the country here.

In NYC, I would have access to the few friends who have offered to help me out with my art and have been telling me to move to NYC for the last 5 or so years. They have THE arts community in the country, the only other place to go would be LA for it's artworld, but out there I would still have to have my own transport. In NYC I can walk and take the subway...I don't like cabs.

Yeah it could be either, but it all depends on how you plan and your outlook on things. I've only been to NYC one time back in July 2004 and I swear to you that I felt more alive when I hit the NYC pavement than I had ever been in Ohio. NY is just alive.

Reading this I would say go for it. !! Sounds as though it could be fabulous creatively!! If you are going to be broke might as well be broke somewhere wonderful !! :

I totally understand the room mate thing. Trying to work in a share house situation is the pits!! Particularly if, like me, you like to work late and with loud EDM And they all lie in the interviews
