You can't have manslaughter without laughter.
"Son," he said without preamble, "never trust a man who doesn't drink because he's probably a self-righteous sort, a man who thinks he knows right from wrong all the time. Some of them are good men, but in the name of goodness, they cause most of the suffering in the world. They're the judges, the meddlers. And, son, never trust a man who drinks but refuses to get drunk. They're usually afraid of something deep down inside, either that they're a coward or a fool or mean and violent. You can't trust a man who's afraid of himself. But sometimes, son, you can trust a man who occasionally kneels before a toilet. The chances are that he is learning something about humility and his natural human foolishness, about how to survive himself. It's damned hard for a man to take himself too seriously when he's heaving his guts into a dirty toilet bowl."Comment

Re: Colin Powell endorses Obama
That was one of the more poignant parts of the interview, I thought. For those that missed it:
"Is there something wrong with being a Muslim in this country? The answer is no. That's not America. Is there something wrong with a seven-year-old Muslim-American kid believing he or she could be president? Yet I have heard senior members of my own party drop the suggestion that he is a Muslim and might have an association with terrorists. This is not the way we should be doing it in America.
I feel particularly strong about this because of a picture I saw in a magazine. It was a photo essay about troops who were serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. And one picture at the tail end of this photo essay, was of a mother at Arlington Cemetery and she had her head on the headstone of her son's grave. And as the picture focused in, you could see the writing on the headstone, and it gave his awards - Purple Heart, Bronze Star - showed that he died in Iraq, gave his date of birth, date of death, he was 20 years old. And then at the very top of the head stone, it didn't have a Christian cross. It didn't have a Star of David. It has a crescent and star of the Islamic faith.
And his name was Kareem Rashad Sultan Khan. And he was an American. He was born in New Jersey. He was fourteen years old at the time of 9/11, and he waited until he could serve his country and he gave his life."Comment

You a talk-radio guy, Toast? Progressive talk really is an entirely different universe than the flock-hearding loudmouths on the other side of the dial. Also love that they sometimes have actual senses of humor. Ever listen to Laura Ingram and hear the sort of drivel that makes her laugh?Comment

Re: Colin Powell endorses Obama
I listen to the Young Turks pretty much every day, which I love. I like to hear what Ed has to say if I happen to be in the car when he's on, but I don't listen to it with any regularity. Other shows I might catch if don't have anything else, but there's nothing I've really loved. Lynn Samuels' voice is too much for me -- I've never made it more than a few seconds (seriously) -- she's on opposite O'Reilly and Limbaugh, and if I'm looking to listen to politics around that time, I'll go back and forth between them just to see what madness those whackjobs are spewing.
I have a 40 minute commute each way to school, so I usually get my fix in every day (unless I go with the new Transitions mix, obv). Stephanie Miller keeps me laughing the whole ride. Seriously, I've had people I know drive by me in the opposite lane, then ask me wtf I was laughing about alone in my car.
Who are the Young Turks? I imagine it has nothing to do with turn of the century Arab nationalism? We still don't have the widest selection of talkers in my market. It's basically either Steph or the macho local guy in the morning, then Big Eddie or Rush in the afternoon. God I'm a nerd...Comment
