Quote that sums up why Obama will be better for the world than McCain

"The U.S. is usually against diplomacy. If the U.S. can establish force as the way to rule the world, the U.S. wins because it's way ahead in force. If diplomacy succeeds, it delegitimates militarism, reduces the relevance of military might and increases the relevance of diplomacy."

You seem to have warmed up to shosh and k3n3 quickly.

You can't have manslaughter without laughter.

"Son," he said without preamble, "never trust a man who doesn't drink because he's probably a self-righteous sort, a man who thinks he knows right from wrong all the time. Some of them are good men, but in the name of goodness, they cause most of the suffering in the world. They're the judges, the meddlers. And, son, never trust a man who drinks but refuses to get drunk. They're usually afraid of something deep down inside, either that they're a coward or a fool or mean and violent. You can't trust a man who's afraid of himself. But sometimes, son, you can trust a man who occasionally kneels before a toilet. The chances are that he is learning something about humility and his natural human foolishness, about how to survive himself. It's damned hard for a man to take himself too seriously when he's heaving his guts into a dirty toilet bowl."

this assumes that diplomacy is more important than militarism, which to him is what we export: to the contrary, what we export is security. There needs to be an equal dosage of both, and to suggest that diplomacy is the end-all-be-all is rather absurd considering that even this nation founded on rational principles of individual freedom has a tendency to be irrational in diplomatic relations. thus, how else does one deal with irrational leaders across the globe?

i think reagan said it best, although I'll say it cryptically applies here: "trust, but verify"

To that, I would say that the threat of military force as solutions to conflicts should always be the last resort. Obama will reach out to leaders like Ahmedinijad and open dialogue, where the McCain policy would more than likely be another few dick waving naval exercises in the Persian Gulf.

And if it's security that we're really exporting, why couldn't we ship some of that noble sounding commodity over to Sudan at any point during the last half century? If we had decided to honor the memory of 9/11 victims by taking up a truly noble cause such as putting a halt to a few machete slaughter-fests and sending some food aid over, it would have done wonders for our country's image. Think back to the months after 9/11, when we had the sympathy of the entire world and a president with a 90% approval rating. All Bush had to do was say the word and the country would have been behind him.

Here's a link to the conversation I quoted Chomsky from. Great read. That man really has a knack for putting things in perspective. Keep in mind this was written in 1991
