DJing M-Audio Fast Track Pro 4x4 Mobile USB Audio/MIDI Interface Question

Does anyone have this. I am contemplating getting it and want to see what reactions are to it.

Nigel, you know I have a bunch of experience with interfaces. So I have to ask you, what type of OS are you using for the computer you would be composing on. I have a Tascam US-144 USB powered 2 channel music interface. And when I was using it, even on my Mac. I had to set the buffer all the way to it's most full place. Which made for some SERIOUS latency of sound.

I highly recommend getting a firewire interface. They have ten times better/quicker latency, which will help you tons when you wanna play along with a track.

I recommend this for your firewire needs and it's a bit more expensive than the USB model and will give you less headaches.

is what I use and am very happy with it. Once I got around it's excentricities.

I've got one of those too....if your going to produce then a firewire like jeffrey said would be best.....i bought this one to record my sets at home.....it's a really good card for its money but not for producing

Basically i'm going to use this for the M-Powered capabilities in the short term for a digital audio class so that I can work with Pro Tools M-Powered while away from @ school (I already have a M-Audio PCI card in my desktop @ home to work with ProTools). In the long term I plan on using it for Traktor with my laptop for DJ'ing. My budget is limited so I can't spend much more that $200.

The digital audio class is focusing primarily on audio fx so I don't believe that the class will be using alot of tracks simultaniously...Jeffrey should this work for MY purpose of it?

it's still going to give you a lot more latency than you would want for your digital audio class. Do you have a way of getting with the professor of the class and asking them their ideas?

Now for traktor...you shouldn't have any problems with it at all. I didn't have any problems with my Tascam USB when I was doing computer dj'ing before. I just had to make sure my hard drive wasn't no where near full as it has this tendency to slightly freeze up when the HD get's to about 19-20gig's before full. But that night I didn't have any hook ups to my set. So I'd say for DJ'ing, USB is just fine, but for producing, get a firewire interface.

I can't for the life of me figure out why Apple is trying to get rid of firewire, when like everyone that has a mac is always talking about how much faster the firewire is than USB.

Yeah I will talk to him about it when I get a chance.

I also have no idea why they are getting rid of it either.

that article was written in Sept of 2007 and said it would be ready by now, but I haven't heard a thing about it so far. USB3 won't matter until the hardware can catch up to it.
